A Cyle Larin penalty for the Saints, just before half-time, was levelled by Oliver Skipp's fantastic over-head kick in the 52nd minute on the South Coast. Eventually reaching extra-time, it was the home side, though, who progressed to the next round, courtesy of James Bree's 109th-minute headed winner.
A second successive defeat by Southampton in a week, the 22nd-placed Foxes now return to Sky Bet Championship duties, with a trip to Stoke City next Saturday (12:30pm GMT kick-off).
Early openings
Divine Mukasa
Frustration was the overriding emotion of the first half for City, backed by over 1,600 members of the Blue Army. We had opportunities to take the lead in Southampton, but found ourselves behind at the break.
Jordan Ayew, one of six players coming into the XI, firstly headed goalwards, although Saints goalkeeper George Long was up to the task. When Ayew dispossessed Joshua Quarshie on the right-most angle of the box, mind you, the Ghanaian let fly, testing Long to a greater degree, but the result was the same, as he parried it away.
Our biggest chance came 38 minutes in. Ayew slipped in Stephy Mavididi down the left. His shot was saved well but it ricocheted off Mavididi and then Oriol Romeu, appearing on course to loop into the net, until Ryan Manning hastily headed away, off the crossbar.
Saints go in front
Victor Kristiansen
Just before the interval, Tonda Eckert’s hosts took the lead. Samuel Edozie won the ball on the edge of the box, before bursting into it, tempting a challenge from Caleb Okoli. The referee adjudged the Italian to have got man as well as ball and it was a spot kick to Southampton.
Larin, on loan from La Liga club Mallorca, stepped up, rolling the ball from 12 yards into the returning Jakub Stolarczyk’s bottom right corner.
It was a disheartening end to the first half for Andy King’s Foxes, who could have led, but had a deficit to contemplate in the away dressing room at the break nevertheless.
Skipp hits back, but Saints win it
Harry Winks
Into the second half, when Louis Page’s long-range drive was deflected behind for a corner, Leicester worked it well. After some neat interplay between Divine Mukasa and Jeremy Monga, it bounced up in the area, where Skipp was waiting.
The former Tottenham man had his back to goal, but his over-head kick caught Long out and it squeezed in at the near bottom post to restore parity. The Saints, meanwhile, had Quarshie to thank for avoiding a late City winner in normal time. Winks’ corner was touched on by Ben Nelson, but Quarshie was there to stop Skipp seeing it over the line, later heading away from the danger, again off the line, to see it to extra-time.
It took until the 109th minute for a moment of real danger for either side and it led to the hosts’ winner. Manning’s free-kick touched Patson Daka’s head in our box, but fell to Bree to nod home at the far corner to settle the contest.
