Hamza Choudhury reflects on our 3-0 loss to Southampton at St. Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday
That defeat ended a run of two successive Sky Bet Championship victories for Leicester City
It was a tough night for the Foxes, with Olabade Aluko being sent off on his full debut
Taylor Harwood-Bellis scored two headers and Finn Azaz also found the net for the Saints
A Taylor Harwood-Bellis brace and a single Finn Azaz strike came during a damaging first half at St. Mary’s Stadium, which also saw full debutant Olabade Aluko sent off for two bookable offences.
It was a night to forget for City, but also one to learn from for Choudhury, who cut a frustrated figure at the conclusion of a game where he adorned the captain’s armband.
“It’s a disappointment,” the Bangladesh international said. “It’s a disappointed changing room. We knew it was going to be a big task to come here. They’re on a good run, but so are we.
“We came here to win the game and I thought we started very well. We conceded the first goal and, we don’t want to make any excuses, but the first two goals… you can argue it’s an offside and then a foul, but once these things happen, you’ve got to react to it.
“There’s still a lot of things which happen before we concede, so ultimately, we’ve got to be responsible, look at ourselves, and that’s what we’ll do.”
Our No.17 was at least enthused by the manner that we halted the tide of Southampton goals on Tuesday night, digging in to prevent the evening from getting any worse.
“We’ve got to be stronger,” he added. “We can’t capitulate after one wrong decision. Once that happens, we’ve got to get together and go again.
“I’m not sure when they scored but we had a lot of game left to play, especially when you have a good start. You can start to rebuild, you can’t fold and go under.
“We owe it to ourselves, the Club, the fans – especially those who have travelled – so we’re really disappointed. We’ll work to be better.
“We definitely didn’t want to concede any more goals. We stuck together at half-time and in the second half and probably could have pushed on a little bit, but when you do, sometimes they can hit you with a sucker-punch.
“We managed what we could. It’s a very difficult situation and ultimately we’ve let ourselves down in the first half-an-hour to 40 minutes.”
