Harry Souttar and John Lundstram visit Leicester City in the Community’s young carers programme
Our Men’s First Team duo joined students for arts and crafts activities, including clay modelling
The project provides young carers with opportunities to relax, socialise and develop beyond their responsibilities at home
The pair joined the students and coaches from Leicester City in the Community for an afternoon of arts and crafts, while chatting with the group and enjoying the opportunity to get to know them.
The visit provided a chance for participants to spend time away from their caregiving responsibilities at home, take part in something different and have fun in the company of their peers alongside City’s players.
Leicester City in the Community’s young carers programme, funded by the Premier League and PFA Players Fund, is a mentoring and enrichment scheme supporting young people who take on caring responsibilities for family members.
It offers emotional support, educational opportunities and activities designed to help them balance these responsibilities with their own personal development.
Speaking at the event, Lundstram said: “It’s touched me quite a lot being here, just listening to some of the stories and understanding what these children have to go through day to day.
“They’re really strong people, and I just couldn’t comprehend some of the things they’re going through at such a young age.
“I really enjoyed the activity, so I hope they had as much fun as I did! It was a great visit and I’ve got so much admiration for them.”
Through creating a supportive environment, the programme helps young carers build connections, develop new skills and enjoy opportunities to simply be young people.
Sessions include after school clubs, one to one mentoring, and out-of-school enrichment activities to help these young carers balance their adult responsibilities with a normal childhood.
Young carer, Mustafa, said: “I loved meeting the players. As a young carer, sometimes life can be quite busy, so it was nice to have fun and forget about my worries for a while.
“The players were really kind and inspiring, and it made me feel like I can do anything if I keep trying my best.”
Tina Shah, Young Carers Coordinator at Leicester City in the Community, added: “It was great to welcome Harry and John to our young carers programme and give the young people the opportunity to spend time with the players.
“Our sessions provide a space where young carers can take a break from their responsibilities, try new activities and spend time with others who understand their experiences.
“Visits like this help make those sessions even more memorable, and we’re grateful to the players for taking the time to get involved.”
