As part of the Football Club’s support for National Apprenticeship Week (5-11 February), this feature profiles what an apprenticeship with the STA consists of, some of its benefits and how to register your interest in getting involved.
Apprentices at the STA are seamlessly integrated into the maintenance operations of all Leicester City sites, encompassing the stadium pitch, match pitches, training facilities, gardens, landscaped areas, and golf course. Recruited primarily from the local community, the STA eagerly welcomes individuals expressing a keen interest in pursuing a career in sports turf or horticulture.
Particularly rewarding are inquiries from local club volunteers aspiring to join the STA’s apprenticeship programmes, with offerings including a diverse range of Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships, such as Sports Turf Operative (pitch maintenance works), Advanced Sports Turf Technician (supervisors), horticulture operative, golf greenkeeper, and land-based service engineering technicians. Currently, the STA has 14 individuals employed across these apprenticeships.
Beyond honing technical skills, apprentices gain invaluable insights into teamwork and time management. Thriving in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, they learn the art of collaboration, ensuring optimal playing surface conditions. The opportunity to work within the Club’s esteemed Grounds Team equips apprentices with a wealth of practical experience.
One standout aspect of an apprenticeship with the STA is the opportunity to tap into the forefront of knowledge and skills, facilitated by expertise and cutting-edge technology. This empowerment enables apprentices to hone their abilities across all tasks, spanning from the meticulous art of mowing to the nuanced cultural control of weeds, pests, and pathogens in sports turf.
The grounds at LCFC act as a dynamic canvas for apprentices, providing a hands-on and immersive platform to apply their acquired knowledge, skills, and behaviours. Notably, a considerable portion of apprentices have successfully advanced their careers, securing skilled and managerial positions within the Club or at other esteemed facilities.
In conclusion, an apprenticeship with the STA opens the door to a fulfilling career in sports turf or estate management. It seamlessly combines education, hands-on experience, and the exciting opportunity to be part of the professional football world.
