Leicester City need points in the battle for top-flight survival, while the Red Devils are also hoping to get away from the unfamiliar surroundings of the bottom half.
Sunday’s game will see former Man Utd striker Ruud van Nistelrooy go head-to-head with the club he also managed earlier this season. Although he’s already been in both dugouts this season, this particular game will represent the first in the Premier League since 2014/15 when a manager has overseen two different teams in a single fixture – Alan Pardew (Newcastle United vs. Crystal Palace).
City have won 25 of our meetings with United, who hold the upper hand with 53 victories. There's also been 25 all-competition draws between the two outfits. It's a 7pm kick-off at King Power Stadium on Sunday. Bucking the trend – inroads to be made
We’ll be aiming to reverse our recent fortunes against United, having lost four of the last five league clashes. The most recent meeting at Old Trafford in November 2024 ended in a 3-0 defeat for Leicester, with goals from Bruno Fernandes, Alejandro Garnacho, and a Victor Kristiansen own goal settling the contest.
Our last positive result came in April 2022 when Kelechi Iheanacho's goal earned us a 1-1 draw in Manchester. However, Leicester fans will fondly remember the thrilling 4-2 victory at King Power Stadium in October 2021, when Youri Tielemans, Caglar Söyüncü, Jamie Vardy, and Patson Daka found the net.
Familiar foes – a fourth clash this term
In cup competitions, the two sides have already met twice this season. Manchester United came out on top in the Carabao Cup Fourth Round with a 5-2 victory, despite goals from Bilal El Khannouss and Conor Coady. Most recently, the sides clashed in the FA Cup Fourth Round in February, with United once again prevailing 2-1 courtesy of goals from Joshua Zirkzee and a controversial Harry Maguire winner.
The history between the clubs extends to high-profile occasions, such as the 2016 FA Community Shield at Wembley. On that day, Jamie Vardy's goal was not enough as United secured a 2-1 win through Jesse Lingard and Zlatan Ibrahimović.
Finding the net – Keyworth & Law
Leicester may take inspiration from our record goalscorer against United, Ken Keyworth, who netted nine times against the Red Devils in the 1960s. Meanwhile, Manchester United's Denis Law holds the record for most goals against Leicester with 13.
The last Foxes player to score a hat-trick against United was Keyworth in 1963, while van Nistelrooy was the last Red Devil to hit three in one game against the Foxes in 2003.
Penalties have also played their part in this fixture. Leicester's most recent successful spot-kicks came in the famous 5-3 victory in September 2014, when David Nugent and Leonardo Ulloa both converted from 12 yards. United's latest penalty against City was scored by Bruno Fernandes in July 2020.
