Searching for a first win of the New Year, the Foxes entertain Ryan Mason’s side on Filbert Way, following a 3-1 defeat to Sheffield United four days earlier. We did triumph in our last home clash, however, beating Derby County 2-1.
With the help of Of Fossils & Foxes co-author Dave Smith, we look into some of the facts and figures from meetings between the sides down the years…
Previous Encounters
Our last two goalscorers.
Our last two goalscorers.
You have to go all the way back to the early 1900s for the first instalment of this fixture, with a total of 117 taking place to date.
Although historically the Baggies have the upper hand overall, tasting victory on 51 occasions to our 41, with a further 25 draws, it’s City who have a much more favourable recent record, unbeaten in our last eight encounters.
Leicester have not lost in the fixture since November 2016 and claimed a 2-1 success the last time the two sides met at King Power Stadium with Wilfred Ndidi and Jamie Vardy scoring the goals during the 23/24 campaign.
The most recent encounter, meanwhile, saw the points shared at The Hawthorns, with an injury-time leveller from the visiting Foxes snatching a last-gasp 1-1 draw, as Nat Phillips’ own goal cancelled out Samuel Illing Junior’s opener.
Landmark Moments, Last Times & Top Scorers

Steve Howard became the third City player to net a hat-trick in the fixture in a Championship clash during March 2008, joining Club heroes Arthur Rowley (who did so against his former club) and Frank Worthington, while the last West Brom player to achieve the feat was future England manager Bobby Robson in 1958, following in Johnny Nicolls’ footsteps.
Howard is also on the list of those to have scored a penalty against West Brom, with Jamie Vardy managing to convert two in the same game – the first of the 20/21 season which ended in a 3-0 victory, although he went on to miss one in 23/24 before eventually finding the net, making him the joint-top scorer in the fixture with eight goals, sharing the honour with West Brom’s Jeff Astle.
We’ve already mentioned the last own goal to occur earlier this term and it was Esteban Cambiasso who was the unlucky party back in November 2014, finding the wrong net to earn the Baggies a 1-0 away Premier League win.
Going all the way back to April 1966, City's John Sjoberg suffered the misfortune of conceding two own goals in the same fixture.
Red cards, however, have been few and far between over the years, with Luke Moore (in 2008) the only Baggies player to be sent off, while you have to go back to the 1990s for the two Foxes to suffer that fate – Simon Grayson the last in 1994, after Tommy Wright.
Played For Both
A loan move to The Hawthorns.
A loan move to The Hawthorns.
The last transfer business conducted between the clubs came at the start of 2023, when Marc Albrighton moved on loan to West Brom, following on from Harvey Barnes temporarily going in the same direction to gain game time at The Hawthorns in 18/19.
That same summer saw the last permanent move the other way, as centre-back Jonny Evans became a Fox for a reported fee in the region of £3.5M.
Nicky Cross and Steve Lynex have both scored for each club in past fixtures: indeed, they both scored in the same pair of fixtures with opposite allegiances.
Other recent connections include Ian Banks, Roman Bednar, Trevor Benjamin, Ally Brown, Kevin Campbell, Franz Carr, James Chambers, Laurie Cunningham, Curtis Davies, Lloyd Dyer, Peter Eastoe, Jonny Evans, John Farmer, Graham Fenton, Marton Fulop, Phil Gilchrist, Mark Grew, Paul Groves, Derek Hogg, Geoff Horsfield, Russell Hoult, Andy Johnson, Diomansy Kamara, Chris Kirkland, Des Lyttle, Gareth McAuley, Lee Marshall, Joe Mattock, Lee Peltier, Kevin Phillips, Kevin Pressman, Riccardo Scimeca, Frank Sinclair, David Speedie, Winston White, Gordon Wills and Chris Wood.
