It will be our first league meeting with the U’s in over three decades, renewing a fixture that dates back to our first-ever encounter back in the 1960s.
Ahead of the 12:30pm BST kick-off, here’s a look at some of the moments which stick out from our past clashes, with the help of Of Fossils & Foxes co-author Dave Smith.
Previous encounters
The two sides last met in the league during the 93/94 old First Division campaign. The final clash of that season, played at Oxford in April 1994, ended in a 2-2 draw with Mark Blake and Julian Joachim on the scoresheet for Leicester.
Earlier that season, the U’s edged a 3-2 win at Filbert Street despite goals from Steve Thompson and Mike Whitlow.
In total, Leicester and Oxford have faced each other 34 times in league and cup competition, with the Foxes collecting victories both home and away across the decades. Among the most recent run of fixtures, a 2-1 win at Filbert Street in April 1993 saw Thompson (penalty) and Steve Walsh secure three points for City.
Landmark moments
The fixture dates back to 1960, when we first met Oxford in the FA Cup, securing a 3-1 win. Since then, the two clubs have shared high-scoring affairs – notably the 4-4 draw at Filbert Street in the First Division in 85/86.
We also enjoyed success in the 70/71 FA Cup, winning a fourth-round replay 3-1 at the Manor Ground after a 1-1 draw at Filbert Street. That result helped maintain a strong record in knockout ties, with Oxford’s only FA Cup win over City coming in January 1988.
The most recent cup meeting was in November 1987, when the sides required a League Cup third-round replay. Despite a double from Mike Newell, Leicester were edged out 3-2 at Filbert Street.
Played for both & top scorers
Several players have worn both shirts over the years. Former Leicester captain Matt Elliott is perhaps the most notable, having joined the Foxes from Oxford in 1997 before going on to lift the League Cup at Filbert Street.
Phil Gilchrist also made the switch to City in 1999, while more recent links include Ben Nelson, who spent time on loan with the U’s in 24/25.
Other connections include David Connolly, Ian Walker and Ricky Sappleton, all of whom featured for both clubs during their careers.
In terms of scoring records, Gary McAllister, Tommy Wright and Steve Thompson lead the way for Leicester against Oxford with three goals apiece. For the U’s, Gary Shelton matched that tally during the late 1980s.
