It’s a test against Southampton at St. Mary’s for Martí Cifuentes’ Leicester City, an 8pm GMT kick-off on the South Coast. In the build-up to this latest test, against a Saints side in form, we’ve called upon the help of Dave Smith, Of Fossils & Foxes co-author, to take a historical look at the fixture…
Previous Encounters
City and Southampton meet again in a long-running fixture that stretches back to 1897/98 and now spans well over a century of league and cup football. Recent history has firmly favoured the Foxes, with us winning each of the last four meetings, including a 2-0 victory at King Power Stadium in May 2025 and a dramatic 3-2 victory at St. Mary’s earlier in the season, as Jordan Ayew struck a late winner. The run also includes a dominant 5-0 home success in April 2024 and a 4-1 away triumph during the 23/24 campaign.
Cup ties have brought their own memorable moments, most notably the 2021 FA Cup last-four tie at Wembley, when Kelechi Iheanacho’s strike sent City into the final. Leicester also advanced past Southampton in the 2018 League Cup, winning a tight fourth round contest on penalties after a 0-0 draw.
Across the complete league and cup history, the two clubs have produced a wide variety of contests – from tight early 20th-century FA Cup battles to free-scoring Premier League meetings. City’s extraordinary 9-0 win at St. Mary’s in 2019 remains not only the Club’s record away win in the top flight, but also the joint-biggest win in Premier League history.
Landmark Moments & Last Times
abdul-fatawu
Abdul Fatawu delivered Leicester’s most recent hat-trick in this fixture, firing three goals at King Power Stadium in April 2024. Southampton’s last treble dates back to March 1987, when Matt Le Tissier struck three at The Dell. Post-war, City’s hat-trick scorers include Ayoze Pérez, Jamie Vardy and Fatawu, while the Saints’ list features Charlie Wayman, Ron Davies and Le Tissier.
Jamie Vardy was Leicester’s most recent penalty scorer vs. Southampton, converting at St. Mary’s in October 2024, while James Ward-Prowse last found the net from the spot for Saints in May 2022. Post-war, Leicester’s penalty scorers have ranged from Arthur Rowley and Jackie Sinclair through to Garry Parker and Paul Dickov, while Southampton’s include Ernie Stevenson, Marian Pahars, Dusan Tadić and Ward-Prowse.
Own goals have been relatively rare between the sides. Leicester’s last came in 1970, when John Sjoberg was unfortunate in a League Cup tie, while Rickie Lambert’s misfortune at King Power Stadium in 2011 was the Saints’ most recent. Wes Morgan also saw an own goal chalked off at St. Mary’s in 2017.
Michael Golding is the latest Leicester player to make his debut in this fixture, doing so in May 2025, while Taylor Harwood-Bellis debuted for Southampton against City in September 2023. Leicester have handed post-war debuts in this game to names including Ted Jelly, Brian Deane, Keith Gillespie, Les Ferdinand and Danny Drinkwater. Southampton’s list features Pat Parker, Graham Le Saux, Kevin Phillips, Dani Ferreira Rodrigues and Harwood-Bellis.
There have been no Leicester red cards in this fixture, while Southampton’s most recent dismissal came in October 2024, when Ryan Fraser was sent off at St Mary’s. Saints players such as Kevin Davies, Dean Richards and Pierre-Emile Højbjerg have also seen red in previous meetings.
Transfer movement between the clubs has been modest in recent years. Leicester’s last direct addition from the Saints was Jannik Vestergaard in 2021, while the most recent outgoing was Dany N’Guessan’s loan to Southampton in 2011.
Played For Both & Top Scorers

Those to have represented both clubs include Ian Andrews, Ryan Bertrand, David Connolly, Mark Draper, Nathan Dyer, Tim Flowers, Dean Hammond, Kasey Keller, Darren Kenton, Matt Oakley, Kevin Phillips, Peter Rodrigues, Dennis Rofe, Tony Sealy, Peter Shilton, Stuart Taylor, Jannik Vestergaard, Dave Webb, Frank Worthington and many others.
Interestingly, while several former Foxes - including Steve Moran, Worthington, Phillips and Connolly - have scored for Southampton against Leicester, no ex-Saint has yet found the net for City in this fixture. Southampton’s Che Adams, born in Oadby, has struck three times against Leicester.
Jamie Vardy leads the way for us with 10 goals against Southampton, while Saints’ Charlie Wayman also holds a tally of 10 in meetings with the Foxes.
