On the back of four successive draws, there’s an air of frustration around the sixth-placed Foxes at the moment, who are aiming for a win to go into the next international break.
The Swans, on the other hand, have made a decent start to the new season of their own under former Foxes defender Alan Sheehan, currently sitting eighth in the table.
Ahead of the clash, with the help of Of Fossils & Foxes co-author Dave Smith, we take a closer look at the history between the two clubs, including standout meetings, landmark moments, and the players who have represented both sides.
Previous encounters
Leicester and Swansea have faced each other regularly across the decades, with memorable contests in both league and cup. In 23/24, the Foxes did the double over the Swans in the Championship, winning 3-1 both home and away – with goals from Jannik Vestergaard, Abdul Fatawu, Kelechi Iheanacho, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Stephy Mavididi, and Yunus Akgün all making the difference.
The clubs have also met in the Premier League era, most notably in 2015/16 when we recorded convincing wins (3-0 away and 4-0 at home) on our way to the title. Across all competitions, there have been tightly fought battles, including a 1-1 draw at King Power Stadium in February 2018. In cup action, Leicester triumphed 2-1 in the FA Cup third round in 2010 and also claimed a two-legged victory in the League Cup back in 1986.
Landmark moments
The November 1955 meeting at Filbert Street was broadcast as the first ever set of highlights from the ground on BBC Sportsview – a notable moment in broadcasting history. In terms of individual feats, Riyad Mahrez struck a hat-trick in Swansea in December 2015, the last Foxes player to net three against Swansea, while Terry Medwin remains the last Swan to do so, back in March 1956.
Other unique moments include Federico Fernández’s unusual record of scoring for both clubs in this series, via an own goal for Leicester before netting at the other end for Swansea. Remarkably, the only two red cards ever shown in this fixture were both in the same game – a 6-1 win for the Swans in March 1956.
Played for both & top scorers
A select group of players have represented both sides over the years. Among them are Andy King, Nathan Dyer, Ryan Bennett, Kyle Naughton and Jordan Ayew, as well as goalkeeper Ben Hamer. Dyer famously moved to Leicester on loan in 2015 during the Club’s title-winning campaign, scoring a brave winner in a comeback win over Aston Villa.
Johnny Morris is Leicester’s leading scorer against Swansea with five goals, while Terry Medwin tops the Swans’ chart in this fixture with four. Both Martyn Waghorn and Dany N’Guessan, on the other hand, scored on their Foxes debuts against the Swans in August 2009.
