On the back of a 4-0 reverse to Oxford United at King Power Stadium last Saturday, the questions during the Manager’s pre-match press conference were centred on the reaction to that loss on home soil.

Martin was keen to stress that reflections have been made on that performance internally, but work quickly turned to focusing on the next challenge – against Jimmy McNulty’s Stockport side, who finished third in last term’s League One standings.

“Inside the building, everyone’s calm,” the 40-year-old told reporters, explaining the response to last week. “We have a process of work. We embark on the work really hard. With regard to everything else, the only thing that will please people is when we start winning games, which we will.

“I think my message is the same. [There’s been] so much change. I knew it wasn’t going to happen quickly. We should still have had better results than we have.

“It’s been frustrating and I’m feeling that more than anyone, but we have to continue to work and stay on path.

“We’ve got 14 new players, 16 or so left the building, so many young players… now we have some men in to help them as well, which is great, but also I think we signed eight or nine after the start of the season.

“I don’t think it was going to be a quick fix. Also, I don’t know when the first five or so games have ever really defined the season. If you look at the table in the first five or six games and then look after 46 games, I’m not sure they’re ever too similar.

“We won’t be defined by it and we have a chance to respond tomorrow. It’s as simple as that. We’re in charge of that. We’re in charge of how we react and respond. That’s a nice position to be in.”

Evaluating the challenge he expects from Stockport, the Manager added: “They’re a really good team. Jim’s done a brilliant job. They like to dominate the ball.

“They play possession football. I hope he gets all the plaudits he can for that because they’re really good. They’re really well coached.

“I went and watched them against Luton last week and I felt they were unfortunate to lose the game. We’ve watched a lot of their stuff and I admire the way he’s got the team playing.

“They’re brave and they’re well coached. They’ve had a team that’s been together for a while, albeit he’s a new coach, but they have good relationships.

“They were very good last season and now a new coach is imprinting some of his ideas and it’ll be a tough game. It’s one I’m also really, really excited about and the players are ready for.”

On what we need to get right to get a positive result in Greater Manchester, he explained: “To play with aggression, intensity and energy and to try and turn the game into one that we want.

“To try and be as dominant as we possibly can and that will always be the plan. Different games require different things and tomorrow I think we’ll be ready to do that.

“They’ve been great, the group. We tried to recruit a lot of character and good people, good human beings first, and we’ve got that. They’ve definitely helped.”
