A host of Foxes forwards made their mark in international matches during this week, including on Sunday, 16 June 1985, when Gary Lineker made his final England appearance as an LCFC player.

Finding the net twice in a 5-0 friendly win over the USA in Los Angeles, he played on for the Three Lions following his move to Everton, retiring from international duty in 1992.
Exactly thirty-one years later, on the same day in 2016, Jamie Vardy helped England to beat Wales 2-1 at the European Championship in France. Cancelling out Gareth Bale’s opener, his 56th-minute equaliser was followed by Daniel Sturridge’s injury-time winner in the group stage.
Ahmed Musa went one better at the 2018 World Cup, on Friday, 22 June 2018, meanwhile, scoring both of Nigeria’s goals to see off Iceland during the group stage fixture.
The 2-0 victory, which also featured Wilfred Ndidi and former Fox Kelechi Iheanacho, was their only win of the tournament and the Super Eagles finished third, unable to qualify for the knockout stages in Russia.
Sending the Super Eagles soaring.
On Friday, 20 June 2008, Nigel Pearson was appointed as our Manager for the first of two successful spells at the Club, following the departure of Ian Holloway.
Previously in charge of Southampton, who stayed up in the Championship at City’s expense, Pearson took over ahead of Leicester starting a season in the third tier for the first time in our history. Soon embarking on a League 1 title-winning campaign, promotion was secured by April 2009.
Promotion secured at Southend.
Going back quite a bit further in time, on Sunday, 22 June 1913, Leicester Fosse made it three straight wins on their tour of Sweden with a 4-2 victory over the Swedish national team; Tommy Benfield with a brace.
A day earlier, Fred Mortimer netted a hat-trick during a 4-0 triumph over a Stockholm Select XI, three days on from scoring twice as a Orgryte/IFK Goteburg Combined XI were beaten 3-2 to kick-off the pre-season competition in Gothenburg with three wins from three.
