Vestergaard was withdrawn on the hour-mark in last Saturday’s 2-1 reverse at Aston Villa, while McAteer has not featured for the Foxes since defeat at Newcastle United in mid-December.
Mads Hermansen, on the other hand, remains out for City and could still be so for the ‘coming weeks’, with Jakub Stolarczyk deputising for the Danish shot-stopper over recent weeks.
Leicester entertain EFL Championship side QPR at King Power Stadium on Saturday for a place in the fourth round of the FA Cup (2pm GMT kick-off).
“Jannik has been assessed,” van Nistelrooy told the media on Thursday. “He’s made his steps after he had to come off. We’re looking to get him on the [training] pitch today or tomorrow and get him ready for QPR but it’s doubtful.
Kasey McAteer has been out over the festive season for the Foxes.
Kasey McAteer has been out over the festive season for the Foxes.
"Kasey is back in full team training. Based on today and tomorrow, he could be available for the game. As I said on Mads, there’s no update in terms of team training. He’ll be out for a bit longer so he’s still in that process. That won’t change over the coming weeks."
Wilfred Ndidi, on the other hand, continues to work on his return, with the Nigerian being out since the 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion on 8 December.
"He’s continuing his individual training," the Manager explained. "He’s not yet with the team. He’s pushing harder on an individual basis. Hopefully we can welcome him to team training over coming weeks."
On the prospect of making changes to his XI and injecting youth into the line-up, the Dutchman added: "We’ll address the squad over the coming days. It’s important to keep our development going.
"We want to break the current run of defeats. That’s important. We want to play well and gain confidence. It’s all part of what I’m looking at when I make decisions on the squad and playing time."
