Patson Daka saw his first-half penalty saved and although there were late opportunities to break the deadlock in Hertfordshire, the Foxes, backed by a sold out away end, were unable to find a way through against Ed Still’s men and it remained goalless.
The weekend’s results leave us 22nd in the Sky Bet Championship table, one point from safety, with seven matches to play in 25/26.
The international break is coming up, hosting Preston North End in our next league fixture on Friday 3 April, before a trip to Hillsborough to face Sheffield Wednesday three days later (both 3pm GMT kick-offs).
A missed opportunity
Patson Daka
With four changes in the XI from defeat to Queens Park Rangers, Gary Rowett was aiming for a response to that home loss, and it was his side who pushed forward to find a way through early on.
Oliver Skipp’s claims for a spot-kick went unheard, before a Harry Winks snapshot from range landed off target during what was a cagey start to the game across the opening half an hour.
With 40 minutes on the clock, the half’s big moment unfolded. Abdul Fatawu used his repertoire of skill and raw pace to speed past Formose Mendy and into the Watford area, only for the defender to drag him to the floor.
Daka stepped up to take the resulting penalty, which was kept out by Egil Selvik in the Hornets goal, who guessed right and tipped the ball onto the post, allowing Mendy to clear.
On the attack
Stephy Mavididi
Positive signs came soon after the break, with Leicester determined not to be perturbed by the penalty miss, with Stephy Mavididi cutting inside from the left and attempting to curl the ball past Selvik, though the ‘keeper got down to save.
Watford offered little in the way of efforts on target, with Hornets captain Imrân Louza’s effort from range the best the hosts could muster at this point.
Back at the other end, Fatawu’s shot deflected into the path of Divine Mukaksa, just introduced into the action, who forced a save from a tight angle on the follow up.
Another substitute, Bobby De Cordova-Reid, then provided a cross that Daka was able to get on the end of; his diving header agonisingly wide of the post, before the offside flag was raised.
Late chances
Bobby De Cordova-Reid
Into the final 20, there was end-to-end action, with Nestory Irankunda’s powerful strike requiring a smart stop from Jakub Stolarczyk, ultimately earning a clean sheet for the second time in three games.
Mukasa, meanwhile, dragged a shot wide, prior to Ricardo Pereira firing across goal, without a player in Leicester blue to touch it home.
Luke Thomas had provided the assist from a set piece in our previous away trip, at Ipswich Town, and looked to do the same this time around, though substitute Joe Aribo headed his free-kick over the bar.
We might have won it with the last kick, from a Fatawu cross five minutes into stoppage-time, which Ben Nelson acrobatically turned towards goal after coming off the bench, but Selvik was equal to it, and we had to settle for a point.
