Leicester City lost 4-0 to Newcastle United on Saturday
James Justin gave his assessment of a disappointing outing
The defender admitted that there is plenty to work on this week
The Foxes turn attention to preparing for the visit of Wolves
A day where little clicked for the Foxes, the 4-0 scoreline at St. James’ Park was indicative of the one-sided nature of the contest against Eddie Howe’s side, with Jacob Murphy’s brace, alongside goals from Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak, earning three points for the home side. Speaking after the game, Justin gave an honest assessment of a testing afternoon in the North East, citing that the performance level across the board was not what is required in the Premier League. “I feel like we were off it all over the pitch; me individually, and as a team,” the full-back admitted. “We just weren’t at the level and we got punished in quick succession after the second half. We were second best, and we know that ourselves, he (the Manager) doesn’t need to say that.
Anthony Gordon assisted Jacob Murphy's opener on Tyneside.
“We have to look in the mirror. The Manager gave us a good structure to play from and we didn’t execute it as well as we know we can. It wasn’t right for the majority of the game. We’ve got to get into the structure earlier and be calm on the ball and try and be slow in possession to keep the crowd down as much as possible.
“As soon as they get rocking here, it’s a difficult place to play. They are on you and pressing, so it’s definitely one to look at in the week. At the end of the first half, we got the structure right and we created chances and pushed them back and got some territory.
“Then, in the second half, we were going out to follow that up. To concede those goals so early in the half, it was just a sucker punch really and something we should be looking at to keep the ball out of our net for as long as possible and stay in the game because we know when the end of the game comes, we’ve got that fighting belief.
“With the ideas between the players and the Manager, we can get points at places like this but today wasn’t that day. When you concede one and it’s 2-0, we’re still in it because we’ve done it in the past. We did it last week against Brighton – we know we can come back.
“But when it went to 3-0, it was a difficult one of whether to try and go for it or slow the game down and shut up shop. In the end, we didn’t do either, which is a bit of everyone’s fault, to be honest. It’s definitely a tough one to take but we’ll move on now.”
It's Wolves up next on Filbert Way.
Keen to look ahead to the Foxes’ next outing, a meeting with Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday afternoon, the defender believes a continuation of their work on the training pitch will be beneficial to recover from defeat to the Magpies.
The 26-year-old continued: “We need to analyse the game and see what we can do better and try and bounce back. We’ve conceded a couple of goals from set pieces, which wasn’t good enough and we need to be locked on to our roles and what the management staff want from us.
“We started well under the new Manager but we’ve had a down here and this is a bit of a reality check. We’ve only been with him for a couple of weeks and there’s a lot more to come from him and his ideas and the way we’re playing and our structure.
“Next week will be a good week and hopefully we can get a good result. There’s definitely things we can work on and he can get his message across with a full week of training.”
