Our Premier League title-winning captain met youngsters from Leicester City in the Community’s Premier League Inspires programme, an initiative designed to support young people in reaching their potential through mentoring, wellbeing activities and group workshops.
Hosted inside the Community Hub on Filbert Way, the session for youngsters aged between 11 and 16 focused on themes closely linked to our unforgettable 5000/1 Premier League title triumph - including resilience, togetherness and learning new skills.
Students took part in a range of interactive activities throughout the morning, including mental health workshops, podcast production sessions and time spent with therapy dogs, while also discussing how our 2015/16 squad may have dealt with pressure and adversity during our historic season.
Wes said: “The message from me today is that there’ll be difficult times, but nothing is impossible. We spoke about resilience and the steps we can take to overcome tough moments.
“The key was trying to spread a good message and help each other. I spoke to them about overcoming obstacles and what can be achieved when you work hard. I wanted them to think about the positives rather than the negatives.”
The defender, who famously played every minute of our 2015/16 league campaign, joined in to answer questions about leadership, overcoming challenges and maintaining focus at the highest level.
He rotated between activity groups, speaking to participants about his experiences both on and off the pitch, while encouraging them to reflect on achievements they were proud of and barriers they hoped to overcome in the future.
The Premier League Inspires programme uses the power of football to engage young people, helping them build confidence, improve wellbeing and develop skills that can support them in education, employment and everyday life.
