The English forward netted her first goal of the season in dramatic fashion, finding the Hammers net in the 97th minute at Chigwell Construction Stadium to confirm a point for the travelling Foxes.
Denying the hosts their first win of the season, the 1-1 draw keeps LCFC Women five points above bottom place and in ninth position, but the goalscorer believes the season has only just started, and there’s plenty more fight to come.
“It was a tough battle, and we expected that,” O’Brien stated. “The position that West Ham are in (in the table), we expected it and knew they were going to go for it.
City drew with West Ham on Sunday afternoon.
“It’s always a difficult place to come with a small pitch, but we stayed fighting, stuck to it until the end and I think, got what we deserved.”
Wheeling off in celebration to the travelling Leicester fans, O’Brien spoke about the importance of Sunday’s goal, as she opened her account for the season in east London.
“I think everyone knows as an attacker that first goal is really vital, and it will give me a lot of confidence going forward,” the striker continued.
“It’s so big in terms of being able to push on and kick on for the season. I think you could see how much it meant to me by my celebration.
“The aim, every time you come off the bench, is to try and have an impact and show why you should be playing, or why the Manager should pick you for the next game. I’m just glad I could make that impact off the bench.”
The Foxes came from behind to take a point.
Frustrated to concede the goal that we did, O’Brien went on to talk about the squad and the competition for spaces, but was keen to stress it is a healthy environment that each player should thrive to work at their best in.
She added: “It was a sloppy goal to concede; they didn’t really open us up or create a lot of chances before that so we were disappointed with it, but I don’t think it shook us up too much.
“We just stayed together, knowing that if we kept it close, we’d get our chance, which we did.
“It’s healthy to have competition, you need the whole squad to get performances and to do their part. You don’t want to be comfortable playing every week because then you won’t play as well as you can.
“We have to keep pushing each other, and if someone comes off and you come on, that you make an impact, but it’s good for everyone, it’s a healthy battle that everyone needs to thrive in.”
