LCFC Community Trust Support Safer Internet Day

The LCFC Community Trust has encompassed Safer Internet Day user cue cards into themed PE lessons to give Year Five pupils at Mowmacre Hill Primary School tips on safe and smart internet surfing.

- Year Five students at Premier League Primary Stars partner school, Mowmacre Hill, received helpful hints on internet safety
- Safer Internet Day is celebrated globally with the theme: ‘together for a better internet’
- Leicester City legends Matt Elliott and Gerry Taggart offered their support to those who took part

In support of Safer Internet Day, the LCFC Community Trust have informed Premier League Primary Stars’ partner primary schools where to access safer internet usage tools.

In the session at Mowmacre Hill, the LCFC Community Trust combined learning with a fun exercise – in this instance a PE lesson – to get the participants engaged with the learning aspect.

The students were split into groups of three or four at different coloured gates with a football in each team. The teams then had to dribble the football around scattered cones to get to their coloured gate on the opposite side of the course.

Numerous sheets of paper and two pieces of card wait on the other side. When each member made it through the course, they had to each read the pieces of paper, which had examples of things that can happen on the internet.

The pupils then decided if each example was good or bad internet practices – LCFC legends Matt Elliott and Gerry Taggart floated around to each team to help them decide which example goes where.

The younger you give this important information into the brains of these young people, then hopefully they will stay clear of any pitfalls the internet can bring.

Glenn Short, a School Sports Coach at LCFC Community Trust discussed the positives of holding sessions like these to make children internet smart.

“In this day and age, the internet is used all of the time and in many different ways,” he said. “It is important for children to understand not just how to be safe on the internet but also why we need to be safe.

“The lessons got the children to think deeply about what the ‘dos and don’ts’ are when using the internet and what impact a negative action or comment could have on others as being kind is really important.”

Former Leicester City defender, Taggart, spoke about the importance of being aware of the bad aspects of the world wide web.

“The internet plays a massive part in everybody’s life,” he said. “The younger you give this important information into the brains of these young people, then hopefully they will stay clear of any pitfalls the internet can bring.”

Taggart also touched upon the importance of making learning fun, adding: “Although you are trying to educate young kids, its vital you make it enjoyable for them.”
