'Sensational' Mentality Pleases Rodgers

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers praised his side’s ‘sensational’ mentality following an impressive 4-1 victory over Huddersfield Town at John Smith’s Stadium on Saturday.

Youri Tielemans’ early long-range curler was added upon by Jamie Vardy after the break, before Aaron Mooy swiftly got one back from the penalty spot for the relegated Terriers.

However, a stunning James Maddison free-kick and a spot-kick from Vardy – his 103rd goal for the Club – sealed a fourth straight win, propelling the Foxes up to seventh in the Premier League.

Speaking to LCFC TV at full-time, Rodgers noted that City’s resilience was put to the test in west Yorkshire, but it was a challenge which his in-form side overcame confidently.

“It’s a very good win for us and, in sectors of the game, their performance level was very, very good,” the Northern Irishman said.

“I saw a different side to the team, in terms of their reaction, after being 2-0 up in the game and then we concede a penalty, which wasn’t a penalty.

“I think Çağs [Çağlar Söyüncü] has got a touch on the ball, so that was unfortunate, and then we saw a reaction from the team.

“A real strong mentality so, attacking-wise, very good… can be better in the control element of the game.

“I think when it got to 2-0, we can control the game better, but this is something that will come with more work and time together and more coaching time on the training field.

“I was so pleased for the players because they put so much into the game.

“It was never going to be an easy game, but we scored four goals and, if you can do that in the Premier League, then it’s very good.”

Vardy: Plenty More To Come

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy speaks to LCFC TV after his double helped the Foxes to a 4-1 win over Huddersfield.

Rodgers was also delighted with Vardy’s exploits in front of goal after the 32-year-old scored his 14th and 15th efforts of the 2018/19 campaign.

“He’s one of the best strikers in this league without question,” the 46-year-old added.

“His ability to finish and to penetrate… he does everything you want. When you’re a manager and you want your striker to run in behind, he runs in behind.

“A couple of times the ball popped away from him in the build-up sector but he was very, very good.

“He’s such a threat, he’s got such a strong mentality, and he’s a real focal point for the team in how we press and how we attack so he was exceptional.”
