Schmeichel Excited By Clash With 'Formidable' Man City

Simply matching Manchester City’s intensity may not be enough – Leicester City must ‘outdo’ the champions to secure a positive result on Monday, says Foxes goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The 32-year-old, who progressed through Man City’s academy as a youngster, says Leicester will approach the Etihad Stadium clash with a strongly-held confidence in their own ability.

Back in December, the Foxes defeated Pep Guardiola’s men at King Power Stadium and Schmeichel believes the visitors will know how to cause them ‘problems’ on Monday.

“They’re a formidable side,” Leicester’s No.1 said this week. “When they’re in full flow, they are really, really difficult to play against, but we have beaten them this season.

Goals: Leicester City 2 Manchester City 1

All three goals from the Foxes' 2-1 victory over Manchester City in the Premier League.

“We gave them problems. I think the way we’re going to play… it’s something that we’re obviously working on and we can cause them problems there as well.

“For us, I think it’s about trying to maintain the level of our performance that we put in against Arsenal, the level of intensity.

“We have to not just match Manchester City, we have to outdo them. I think that’s the only way you’re going to get a result against them.”

Brendan [Rodgers] has come in and put a really specific identity on what he expects, what he wants and what he envisages us being.

Schmeichel also reserved praise for the impact Brendan Rodgers has made at the Football Club since the Northern Irishman’s arrival at King Power Stadium in February.

Leicester are beginning to build an identity under Rodgers’ management and that is something which will only improve over time, Schmeichel believes.

He added: “I think we had a period of obviously having a lot of success with winning the league and then you get typecast as a certain team.

“People knew us as a 4-4-2 team who would sit back and counter-attack. You’ve had this success and then all of sudden, we tried to morph and change our style a little bit.

“We’ve been in a little bit of a transition with not really knowing our identity really of what type of team we are.

“Brendan has come in and put a really specific identity on what he expects, what he wants and what he envisages us being.

“You’re starting to see that more and more. With a pre-season and work with him and his team, you’re going to see a clear identity and a clear structure of how we’re going to play.”
