Calderwood celebrates with Macclesfield Town manager Sol Campbell after both coaches guided their sides to safety in 2018/19.

Former Swindon Town, Tottenham Hotspur and Scotland international defender Colin Calderwood has been manager of Cambridge since last December.

As a player, Stranraer-born Calderwood achieved remarkable success with Swindon in particular, winning promotions from the old Fourth Division to the Premier League in just eight years.

Following his retirement from playing in 2001, he turned to management at Northampton Town, eventually winning promotion from League 2 as runners-up in 2006.

That success attracted the interest of Nottingham Forest and Calderwood repeated the feat at a higher level, returning the East Midlands club to the Championship at the end of the 2007/08 campaign.

A brief spell as assistant manager to Chris Hughton at Newcastle United followed, as the Magpies won the Championship title, before he moved to Hibernian as manager.

However, Calderwood was able to win just 12 matches out of 49, meaning that in November 2011, he left the Scottish Premiership outfit.

Over the past six years, he has enjoyed spells as assistant manager at Birmingham City, Norwich City, Brighton & Hove Albion and Aston Villa, before switching to Cambridge last Christmas.

Winning seven and drawing six of his 24 matches in charge at Abbey Stadium, the U's were able to avoid relegation out of the Football League by a margin of six points.

Jabo Ibehre will want to improve on his tally of six goals for the U's last season.

Colin Calderwood has strengthened his U's squad with four new signings so far this summer - Callum Burton, Luke Hennant, Harvey Knibbs and Kyle Knoyle.

Meanwhile, nine players - Jake Carroll, David Forde, Matthew Foy, Brad Halliday, Emmanuel Osadebe, Sam Squire, Lee Watkins, Jevani Brown and David Amoo - have been let go in the off-season.

Brown, who will play for Colchester United next season, ended the 2018/19 campaign as Cambridge's top goalscorer with a tally of seven goals and a total of eight assists.

Jabo Ibehre and George Maris, meanwhile, both netted six goals apiece for the Abbey Stadium outfit. In total, Cambridge won 12 and drew 11 of their 46 league matches last term, falling to 23 defeats.

Cambridge's most recent piece of silverware was the FA Trophy in 2014.

Cambridge have won the League 1 (1991) and League 2 (1977) titles over their 108-year history.

In terms of the major domestic cup competitions, The U's have reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on two occasions, in 1990 and 1991.

They reached the same stage of the League Cup in 1993. Their one and only top-flight season, on the other hand, ended with relegation in 1992/93.

Their most recent trophy success came in 2014, however, as Richard Money's men overcame Gosport Borough at Wembley Stadium.

Abbey Stadium has been the home of Cambridge United since 1932 and currently has a capacity of 8,127.

Leicester City supporters are set to be housed in the Marstons Smooth South Stand, where up to 1,600 supporters can be seated.

City's most recent trip to Abbey Stadium ended in a 3-1 victory in March 1993, courtesy of a brace from David Lowe and Julian Joachim's solitary effort.

Gary Lineker and Alan Smith

City's strike force became one of the most potent in the country.

Peter Welsh and Gary Lineker found the net for Leicester City in a 2-1 win at Abbey Stadium in April 1982.

During Jock Wallace's final season in charge at the Club, the Foxes hovered on the periphery of a promotion challenge in the Second Division.

While it would have to eventually wait another year, until the management of Gordon Milne, this win boded well for Leicester's future.

Lineker and Alan Smith's partnership in attack was becoming well established, while Milne inherited a squad which was good enough to finish third the next season.

City eventually concluded the 1981/82 campaign in eighth place. Over 14 competitive meetings with Cambridge, Leicester have won seven and drawn five, losing just twice.
