U23s Talking Points: Early Dominance, A Big Point & Johansson Impresses

Following a 0-0 draw for Leicester City's Development Squad at Premier League 2 Division 1 champions Everton on Monday, LCFC TV pundit Sean St Ledger provided his thoughts live on air at full-time.
More on this story...

Following an encouraging start at Merseyrail Community Stadium, the Foxes had to battle hard for a point in the second period following Darnell Johnson's dismissal in the 55th minute.

St Ledger joined commentator Nick Walsh in the gantry in Southport for the clash - and the former Fox and Republic of Ireland defender picked out four headlines to discuss...

Something to build on

The clash was slowed by several stoppages throughout.

St Ledger said: "I think Leicester will be very, very happy. [Steve] Beaglehole and the players will be delighted with a clean sheet, down to 10 men. You can’t ask for any more in those circumstances. Maybe in the first half, they lacked a little bit of creativity, but it’s the first game of the season and they go back to Leicester with something to build on."

Johansson Saves Well Late On

One of several saves made by Viktor Johansson during Monday's PL2 meeting with Everton in Southport.

St Ledger said: "I thought Johansson was absolutely fantastic today. He’s made some really important saves at crucial times. His handling from crosses has been superb, as has his kicking. He’s picked up from where he left off last season and I think he’s instilled confidence into Leicester’s back four with his own confidence with those saves throughout the second half."

Early dominance bodes well

St Ledger said: "The first half was quite scrappy and both teams cancelled each other out. They were both playing 4-4-2, so it’s almost like man-for-man out there. Leicester started really brightly and pinned them in early on, but there wasn’t enough creativity in the final third. To have that dominance early on, against a team of Everton’s quality at this level, will be pleasing though."

Defensive bonds form

Callum Wright looks to create an opening for the Foxes.

St Ledger said: "It’s the building of a defenders’ union. There are new lads in the backline and some of the lads returning from loan spells away. Defenders don’t really get the glory, if you make a mistake, you get the finger pointed at you. When you get a cleansheet – and you’re blocking, you’re heading, your backs are against the wall – there’s no better feeling."
