Rodgers' Pre-Newcastle Fitness Update: Maddison

Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers says James Maddison is a doubt for Sunday's visit of Newcastle United to King Power Stadium.

- Midfielder James Maddison's ankle issue will be assessed before the match
- Brendan Rodgers has no other fitness complaints to consider for the Magpies clash
- Live coverage of the encounter begins at 1:30pm BST on Sunday on LCFC Radio

Maddison, whose stunner sealed a 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last week, was not involved in Tuesday's 4-0 Carabao Cup success at Luton Town due to an ankle issue.

Rodgers says the Club's medical staff will give the 22-year-old midfielder 'every chance' to be involved on Sunday, but insisted that no risks will be taken with his long-term fitness.

Speaking to the national media at King Power Stadium on Friday afternoon, Rodgers said: "We’ll see over the next couple of days. He’s obviously going to be a doubt.

It’s just the risk of whether he’s going to last the game or not. It’s questionable whether he’ll play or not. He’s such a talented player, we’ll give him every chance.

"He’s put some weight on his ankle so we’ll see over the coming days. He’s a big talent and he’s been playing great. We’ve got a really strong squad.

"We made some changes in the week, and the rhythm, speed and intensity in the team was the same.

"It’s just the risk of whether he’s going to last the game or not. It’s questionable whether he’ll play or not. He’s such a talented player, we’ll give him every chance."

However, Rodgers, who revealed there are no other injury concerns in his squad, believes if Maddison does miss the game, it will represent an opportunity for somebody else to impress.

"It just means we need to look at the creative side to our game," the Northern Irishman added. "A player of that importance, of course, it’s always disappointing if he’s not available.

"Our success will be based around the team. If he’s not available, we’ll have someone to come in and it’s a great opportunity."
