In 1938, twin brothers, Arthur and Henry D’Angelo, emigrated from Italy to America as 12-year-olds. After arriving in a country where they didn’t speak the language, they quickly picked up some useful phrases and combined these with the notion of hard work, selling 2-cent newspapers on the streets of Boston. Newspapers, turned into flowers and ice-cream and then finally, sports memorabilia.
The twins soon found themselves immersed in the hive of activity surrounding Fenway Park, the home of the Boston Red Sox, and from here their love of baseball and anything with a brand was born. Nine years later, ’47 brand was founded. They now produce almost every form of branded souvenir imaginable, ranging from their original pennants all the way through to their speciality caps and premium knitted headwear.
’47 brand today is managed by Arthur’s four sons, however he himself is never far away from action. Still at the heart of the brand, the 91-year-old spends every game day happily sat on his baseball glove armchair in the centre of their Flagship store on Yawkey Way. Posing for photos and greeting fans in store, before taking his usual seat inside the stadium to watch his beloved Red Sox.
What started from pushcarts on the streets around Fenway Park, has grown into a premium global sports lifestyle brand that holds licensing agreements for the four major professional sports leagues in the US: NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL as well as over 900 colleges and many other sporting organisations.
