City Sink Luton As Coatsworth Nets A Brilliant Volley

Gary Coatsworth and Iwan Roberts found the net in a memorable 2-1 success over Luton Town at Filbert Street on 12 February, 1994.

Following two consecutive Wembley heartbreaks, Brian Little's Foxes were once again looking good to qualify for the second tier's play-offs when Luton Town visited Filbert Street on 12 February, 1994.

Despite two away defeats in a row, at Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest, City had enjoyed three home successes in the New Year, over Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Charlton Athletic.

Luton, on the other hand, were embroiled in a fight to avoid dropping down into the third tier under the management of David Pleat, who joined the Hatters after a four-year spell at Filbert Street.

However, it would turn out to be an unenjoyable return to Leicester for Pleat with a wonder strike from Gary Coatsworth and Iwan Roberts' effort reducing a Julian James to a mere consolation.

While Roberts' header was a simple finish, Coatsworth's goal remains a point in time for Foxes supporters, many of whom will have been sat behind it in the old Double Decker Stand at Filbert Street.

Leicester in fact only won another five games until the end of the season, but it was enough to book them a place in the play-offs, where they beat Derby County in the final to reach the Premier League.

Yakubu's Stunner Contributes To Derby Triumph

Yakubu netted a brilliant half-volley, while Andy King capped off a flowing team move, in Leicester City's 2-0 win at Derby on 12 February, 2011.

Resurgent Leicester sealed a sixth win in seven matches under the management of Sven-Göran Eriksson with a stylish 2-0 victory at Derby County on 12 February, 2011.

Only a 1-1 draw at Preston North End blemished their otherwise perfect form in 2011, which included wins over Hull City, Swansea City, Millwall, Sheffield United and Barnsley.

Their late dash for the play-offs continued in earnest at Pride Park, with Yakubu opening the scoring in extraordinary fashion, taking down Paul Gallagher's header, having a touch and smashing it goalwards.

It was a goal which typified the confidence flowing through Eriksson's Leicester side at the time, while a later finish from Andy King concluded another blistering team move from the visitors.

Seven days later, the run continued with Yakubu again finding the net at Bristol City, before Martyn Waghorn's 92nd-minute effort sealed all three points in dramatic circumstances.

However, the play-offs were ultimately elusive for Eriksson, whose side were bottom when he took over the reins in October 2010, prompting a busy summer of recruitment at King Power Stadium.

Kasper Schmeichel, Jermaine Beckford, Sean St Ledger, David Nugent and Paul Konchesky were among the names to come in, but Eriksson was replaced by Nigel Pearson after 13 games.

Gallagher Brace Secures Victory Over Cardiff

Watch Paul Gallagher net a brace as Leicester City defeated Cardiff City in the Championship on this day in 2012...

Almost a year after that Derby triumph, Pearson's second spell in charge of the Foxes was beginning to gather steam as he built a squad which would return to the Premier League in 2014.

However, City would ultimately finish nine points adrift of the top six at the end of the 2011/12 season, despite pre-season optimism suggesting Eriksson would lead a title charge.

Pearson was rebuilding Leicester's squad and the promising signs for the future were there on 11 February, 2012 as the Foxes enjoyed an impressive 2-1 win over promotion-chasing Cardiff City.

Paul Gallagher put the home side in front with a penalty, turning his back on goalkeeper David Marshall, before spinning on the spot and sending a powerful drive into the back of the net.

His second goal of the afternoon was even more impressive, though, as Gallagher sent a curling free-kick crashing into Marshall's bottom corner from 25 yards out to make it 2-0.

While Peter Whittingham got one back for the Bluebirds, City held on for the three points with future Premier League title winners Schmeichel, Danny Drinkwater and Wes Morgan in the squad.
