Centre-back Benković, spending the remainder of the 2019/20 season with Sky Bet Championship side Bristol City, scored a magnificent curler at Ashton Gate on Wednesday.

The Croatian picked his spot from the edge of the penalty area on the cusp of half-time to give the Robins a lead over Stoke City, who later hit back through Danny Batth.

After wins over Hull City and Middlesbrough, Benković’s adopted club had ignited their play-off hopes but they now trail sixth-placed Cardiff by five points with two games remaining.

They tackle Swansea City at Liberty Stadium on Saturday (3pm kick-off), before the Robins host Preston North End in the south west the following Wednesday (7:30pm kick-off).

Elsewhere, winger Ghezzal also got on the scoresheet for Fiorentina to help the Italian side climb to 13th in Serie A with a 3-1 success over relegation-battling Lecce on Wednesday night.

Croatia Under-21s international Benković opens the scoring in superb fashion for the Robins.

After Federico Chiesa's sixth-minute opener at Via del Mare, Ghezzal sent a perfectly struck free-kick into the top corner to double La Viola's advantage in style.

Patrick Cutrone added another for Giuseppe Iachini's side, who still have to play Torino (H), Inter Milan (A), Roma (A), Bologna (H) and Società Polisportiva Ars et Labor (A).

Andy King’s Huddersfield Town, meanwhile, are in action on Friday, when they tackle second-placed West Bromwich Albion at John Smith’s Stadium (5:30pm kick-off).

In Belgium, midfielder Kamal Sowah is continuing to prepare for OH Leuven’s promotion-deciding second leg tie against Beerschot on Sunday 2 August (6pm kick-off).

The Proximus League side, now under the management of the experienced Marc Brys, lost the first leg 1-0 in March away from home before his appointment.
