A Letter From Wes Morgan

Following confirmation that Leicester City captain Wes Morgan will retire at the end of the 2020/21 campaign, the heroic Foxes skipper has penned a personal letter to the supporters of all the clubs he's represented...
More on this story...

Well, after 20 years of professional football, today I announce my retirement from the game.

I have been fortunate and blessed with the fantastic clubs I have had the opportunity to play for – Nottingham Forest over 400 times and Leicester City over 350 times, not forgetting Kidderminster Harriers, who gave me my professional debut during a period on loan early in my career. I’m also honoured to have won more than 30 caps for Jamaica, having always dreamed of the chance to play international football.

I’ve had highs and lows throughout my career – from the lows of relegation to the highs of winning the Premier League. I’ll never forget playing in the Gold Cup Final for Jamaica, getting promoted to the Premier League, playing and scoring in the UEFA Champions League, winning the FA Cup and scoring that goal at Old Trafford which turned out to be the one that got us over the line in 2016.

Oh, and for the Forest fans, that rocket against Notts County will always be right up there!

I’ve seen the sacrifices made by footballers at every level and the lengths to which players have to go to make the best of themselves and do the best they possibly can for their clubs. It’s a privileged career, well-rewarded at the highest levels and I’m eternally grateful for what the game has done for me. I appreciate every one of the players I have played alongside or against, the journeys they have been on and the friendships I’ve made. The moments in my career where I have been recognised by those peers are among the proudest I have experienced.

I would like to thank my friends and family for their eternal support through the ups and downs, no matter what.

Thank you to all the coaches and parents who supported and helped me when I was a kid playing for my local teams and who gave me the chance to make it as a professional footballer.

A big thank you to Brendan Rodgers and all the staff that have kept me going over the last few seasons and to the great memories we share.

To Vichai, Top, the Srivaddhanaprabha family and all the senior management at Leicester City who work so hard behind the scenes to make the club as successful as possible – thank you for helping me to achieve my dreams. To wear the armband for Leicester City for almost 10 years and to lead the team out to the roar of the fans has given me the greatest pleasure, pride and joy and I hope I have served your club well.

To all my Jamaica family, Nottingham Forest family, Leicester City family, and to all the people from those clubs who I knew but are no longer with us.

And last, but not least, a massive thank you to the fans for their tremendous support throughout the years. I hope I have made you proud.

Thank you x

Wes Morgan
