Club Donates Kit To Kenya As Part Of Successful Charity Trip

Leicester City representatives accompanied the Royal Air Force in delivering kit to various Kenyan schools as part of a relief effort undertaken earlier this year.

- Kit donated by Leicester City reached Kenya earlier in 2022
- First team kit co-ordinator Rob Owen was part of the travelling team
- A joint effort from the military and civilians helped supply 12,000 items
- Kelechi Iheanacho took part in a Q&A session at one of the locations

A travelling party of 15 included one of City’s first team kit co-ordinators, Rob Owen, who joined the team representing the RAF Shawbury-based Taking Football to Africa & Beyond Appeal in their mission to deliver ‘Aid through Football’.

Kit supplied by LCFC was distributed across the country over a 10-day trip to the East African nation, marking the 15th visit since the appeal first launched in 2006.

Leicester City kit co-ordinator Rob Owen was a member of the group who undertook the project in February.

During that time, over 300,000 items of football kit and children’s clothes have been supplied to 59 countries worldwide. In 2022 alone, close to 12,000 items were handed out to 36 groups, schools, orphanages, academies, and children’s homes.

A journey which began in February 2022, after 18 months of planning work, took the team to the country’s capital, Nairobi.

Gilgil, Mathare, Githorogo and Kibera were some of the other locations visited, as well as the largest slum in Africa, in Kibagare, where Foxes forward Kelechi Iheanacho took part in a live Q&A session with those from Kibagare FC.

Children living in some of the poorest areas of Kenya were given shirts to wear.

In the town of Ruiru, meanwhile, on the edge of Nairobi, the team played a football match against the children.

Organiser, Wing Commander Neil Hope MBE, who is currently based at Shawbury, commented: “Huge thanks go out to all who have assisted the Appeal, especially to Leicester City, who have donated so much kit.”
