Record Victory As Rampant Foxes Beat Liverpool

LCFC Women climbed to 10th in the Barclays Women's Super League after a Club record 4-0 win over Liverpool on Saturday afternoon at King Power Stadium.

The Foxes lifted themselves back off the bottom of the WSL after goals from Josie Green, Carrie Jones, Ashleigh Plumptre and Missy Goodwin sent the Foxes on their way to a record breaking victory over Liverpool.

There was just the one change to the starting line-up that beat Reading in dramatic fashion four weeks ago, with Green coming in to replace the suspended Sam Tierney, who picked up her fifth yellow card of the season during the win over the Royals.

In the early stages, it was clear that Leicester fancied their chances in the match, and were pressing high up the pitch in a 4-3-3 formation. They saw their first chance just over 10 minutes in. Green saw the ball bouncing on the edge of the box and tried her luck, but watched her looping effort sail over the top of the crossbar.

The early persistence paid off for the Foxes who found themselves with a two-goal advantage just 20 minutes in, starting when they broke the deadlock through Green, who fired the ball towards goal from inside the penalty area, taking a deflection on its way through.

Six minutes later, Leicester doubled their lead when Carrie Jones took aim from the edge of the box, and with the help of a deflection off a Liverpool defender, saw her effort loop over Rachael Laws and into the back of the net.

Little over the half-hour mark, City had the chance to score again when a scramble inside the visitors area fell to Remy Siemsen, who from close range curled an effort onto the post before the Reds managed to clear the danger.

The Foxes started the second half in a similar fashion, and soon got the third goal that they deserved. A whipped in corner landed on the head of Plumptre who directed it towards goal, giving City a commanding lead.

Over the second half, the visitors gave a better account of themselves and threatened Leicester's backline, but bar a handful of opportunities where the Reds broke through, the City defence stood firm to prevent any way back for the Merseyside club.

Determined to be unbeaten in goal, Janina Leitzig claimed any attempt on target from Liverpool, which included a brilliant save three minutes from time, as she tipped a Liverpool effort around the far post.

At the other end, it looked like the scoreline was guaranteed, but late substitute Goodwin was keen to leave her mark on the game and headed home a fourth for Leicester in the final seconds of the match.

Shortly afterwards, the final whistle blew, bringing an end to proceedings as the Foxes made history by claiming the biggest ever WSL win recorded in the Club's history, as Leicester take three points from a great afternoon on Filbert Way.
