Big Challenges To Come, Says Thomas

The young Foxes lost 4-3 to Burnley in the Premier League Cup on Friday, despite twice taking the lead via goals from Wanya Marçal and Amani Richards. Thomas himself got on the scoresheet in the stoppage-time, but it proved to be a consolation.

Speaking after the game at LCFC Training Ground, the midfielder reflected: “I thought that we were good in patches of the game, especially in the first half where we created quite a few chances. But we didn't put them to bed and let them get back into the game.

“I think it's just something we need to work on as a team. In the few games since the start of the season, we've been scoring the few first goals and then in the last few minutes conceding.

“Sometimes I've noticed that when they score, our heads just drop and we think that that's it, they're on top now, but it's a mentality thing. We need to see it as something where we get up and go again. But as you can see in the game, boys' heads drop. It's just something that we need to look back at and go forward in the next game.”

Coming into the team this season, the former Chelsea youngster has scored twice in his first three appearances for the Development Squad, mainly operating from an advanced midfield role.

“So far, so good,” the 19-year-old continued. “It's a team game. I want to win with the team and we just need to get better in those areas. I would say in the position I played in the first half, probably a left eight, or anywhere on the left side, is where I feel most comfortable.”

Wigan Athletic are up next for City’s Under-21s, facing the Sky Bet League 1 side in their EFL Trophy opener at DW Stadium on Tuesday evening (7pm BST kick-off). Fleetwood Town and Tranmere Rovers also make up Group D.

He added: “The challenge in itself, playing against men, is going to be what matters to us. It's going to be a big challenge, so we're looking forward to it.”
