The Nigeria midfielder has not featured for the Foxes since the win over Cardiff City at the end of 2023 but is now on his way back to fitness and could potentially return slightly earlier than expected, as the Manager explained on Friday.

Maresca, speaking ahead of Saturday’s Sky Bet Championship clash with Queens Park Rangers, also expressed the importance of that position on the pitch and why they have missed the 27-year-old during his absence.

“They are all good to be honest,” the Italian commented in his pre-match press conference. “Wilf is still out and that is all. He has already started to do some sessions with us, but part of the session, not all.

If he can be back earlier than three months, it is much better for us.

“Hopefully next week he can complete the session with us, which means he starts to be available. Hopefully we can have Wilf back because, as you know, he is an important player for us.

“That’s why I said if he can be back earlier than three months, it is much better for us. He is an important player. Now we are trying to find solutions to adapt players but hopefully we can have him back very soon.”

The 44-year-old also revealed that Jamie Vardy is in contention to face QPR after sitting out each of the last two fixtures. McAteer remains sidelined through injury, however, with Jannik Vestergaard serving the first of his two-game suspension for picking up 10 yellow cards in the league.

“Kasey is out, Jamie is okay,” he added. “He (Vestergaard) is a very important player. We have used Conor [Coady], Wout [Faes], so we’ll see tomorrow.”
