Late Man Utd Goal Condemns City's Women

A single moment of excellence from Manchester United's Ella Toone was the difference at King Power Stadium as LCFC Women fell to a narrow defeat.
More on this story...

Despite a great effort on Sunday afternoon from Leicester, Toone's second-half goal confirmed the three points for the travelling outfit as City head into the final two games of the Barclays Women's Super League season in 10th place.

Last weekend also saw a record attendance for a WSL game on Filbert Way, with 6261 supporters of both Leicester and Manchester Utd watching on, breaking the previous record which was set last season against Arsenal (5321).

Three changes were made from the Foxes' side that were beaten by Arsenal at Emirates Stadium last weekend with Asmita Ale and Missy Goodwin coming in for CJ Bott and Deanne Rose, while there was a swap in goal with Janina Leitzig coming in for her first start since injury; Lize Kop dropping to the bench.

The visitors were holding the majority of possession in the opening stages of the game, but City were looking to make the most of the football, creating a chance for Jutta Rantala after some good work in the Manchester corner but the final effort was high and wide of the target.

Battling the Red Devils on Filbert Way.

United's first attempt on target fell to Geyse, who forced a great save out of Leitzig - the 'keeper turning the effort behind for a corner before expertly claiming the set-piece delivery.

Melvine Malard was next to test the former Bayern Munich shot-stopper which Leitzig was once again equal to it before a quick Leicester counter-attack supplied Rantala with a second chance of the day, but the ball didn't come down quick enough to test Mary Earps.

Leicester looked the more lively team at the start of the second half, Yuka Momiki causing problems for the Manchester defence, most notably when the winger drove into the box and picked out Goodwin, who saw her header fly agonisingly past the far post.

Moments later, Leitzig performed heroics in the City net to keep her side level, getting down quickly with her right foot to turn behind a goalbound effort from Malard; the French striker was then replaced by Nikita Parris.

Leicester have one more home game this season against Liverpool.

The Foxes' best chance of the game came with little over 10 minutes to go when great hold-up play from Lena Petermann allowed her to pull the ball back to Momiki but from close range she could only find the gloves of the Lionesses' keeper.

That chance came back to bite City in the form of a Man Utd goal just minutes later, as Toone, not long off the bench, produced a moment of magic and found the top right-hand corner from over 30 yards out.

Into 11 added minutes we went, and Leicester pushed hard to find a way back into the game, coming close when a low effort from Saori Takarada was heading goalwards but couldn't beat Earps before a Bott attempt saw a similar outcome.

The whistle brought an end to proceedings on Filbert Way as the Foxes now look to next weekend when they take on West Ham United at Chigwell Construction Stadium in their final away game of the 2023/24 campaign.
