Liverpool Reverse For Foxes On Final Day

LCFC Women were beaten 4-0 by Liverpool on the final day of the Barclays Women's Super League season on Saturday afternoon.

An early strike from Sophie Haug gave the visitors the lead at King Power Stadium before a hat-trick off the bench from Leanne Kiernan condemned Leicester to a loss on home soil, finishing the 2023/24 campaign in 10th place.

There was one change to the line-up compared with the team that drew 1-1 with West Ham United last time out, with Yuka Momiki dropping to the bench to allow CJ Bott to come into the fold.

Liverpool started on the front foot on Filbert Way, forcing a great save from Janina Leitzig when a free-kick from the edge of the box looked destined for the top corner before the German shot-stopper got involved.

The Foxes were beaten by Liverpool on Filbert Way.

The Reds' early persistence did pay off within the first 10 minutes when they took the lead after Haug managed to peel away and guide an accurately delivered ball into the bottom corner.

Following this, City started to see more of the football, trying to break in behind on the wings with Jutta Rantala and Missy Goodwin, but were failing to connect with the final pass that would offer them a sight at Rachael Laws' goal.

Just before the interval, Leicester had their best chances to equalise, first when a Rantala free-kick from just outside the box was turned away by Laws before Julie Thibaud followed up with a rebound effort, but once again, found the gloves of the Liverpool 'keeper.

The biggest round of applause in the game came just after the hour-mark when Aileen Whelan, who announced her retirement from the game just last week, replaced Goodwin and was straight at the heart of the action when her attempted header was saved.

City finish 10th in the Barclays Women's Super League.

Unfortunately, these celebrations were cut short. Liverpool doubled their advantage, as Kiernan, not long off the bench, directed the ball past Leitzig into the far corner.

Into the final minutes and the win was confirmed for the hosts when the determined Kiernan was at it again rounding off a hat-trick, first by cutting inside Asmita Ale and firing the ball into the back of the net, before catching City off guard, cutting inside and finding a similar conclusion.

The Foxes tried force a way through, coming closest when Ava Baker's effort was tipped over the bar, but the Merseyside defence wasn't to be beaten, and the defeat on Filbert Way brings an end to the campaign for Leicester, who can now regroup in the summer ahead of a fourth consecutive season in the WSL.
