The young Foxes have made an unbeaten start to the new Premier League U18 season and sit third in the standings, but were unable to replicate that stellar form in the cup.

An early brace from Dilan Markanday put the visitors in a strong position and, despite Khanya Leshabela’s 66th minute penalty halving the deficit, City couldn’t find an equaliser.

Leicester pushed Spurs hard in the latter stages as Tyrese Shade was denied by goalkeeper Jonathan De Bie before Morgan Brown rattled the woodwork just before the whistle.

City can get back to winning ways when they welcome West Ham United to Belvoir Drive on Saturday afternoon (12pm kick-off), sitting just two points behind early leaders Chelsea.

City: Stolarczyk, Elewa-Ipakwu, Ughelumba, Gill (Williams 75), Heaven, Husek, Tee, Leshabela (c), Shade, Brown, Fielding.

Subs not used: Thomas, Davies, McLeod, Pennant.

Goal: Leshabela 66 (pen).
