Fans' View: Chilwell's Rise An Intriguing Subplot Of Huddersfield Clash

Ahead of this weekend's visit of Huddersfield Town to King Power Stadium, we hear from a Foxes fan on the stories dominating the pre-match discussion...

‘In-vogue’ and ‘left-back’ would not typically be deemed as a match if playing word association, but a certain Fox is starring in a resurgence for those who marshal the left-hand side.

The opening weeks of the season have seen the Premier League's left-backs take the plaudits as their lung-busting runs and driving deliveries have meddled with opposition back lines across the country.

Such a marked improvement from those who take up the position actually proved Leicester City’s downfall on opening night.

On that occasion Manchester United’s Luke Shaw proved the match winner but his opposite number, Chilwell, won plenty of admirers.

Both were swiftly rewarded for their impressive club form with a call up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Ben Chilwell became the 20th player to represent England while at the Club after his appearance against Switzerland in 2018.

Chilwell, along with close friend and City teammate Demarai Gray, were handpicked by the national team manager for the Three Lions' international against Switzerland.

The call-ups were made even sweeter for the pair with the match hosted on Filbert Way.

Chilwell went on to make his full international bow in victory over the Swiss in a backline that also included fellow Leicester defender Harry Maguire.

However, for Chilwell, this was not mere reward for early season promise, or the fruits of gruelling summer runs at his local park.

This was the latest landmark in a career that has seen the Milton Keynes-born defender imperiously rise through both Leicester and England set-ups - a climb to the top that has seen him depart on loan just once to Huddersfield Town during the 2015/16 season.

Eight appearances were made at Huddersfield in 2015/16.

Both City and Saturday’s visitors to King Power Stadium have spent their recent history across all three of English football’s top divisions.

For both clubs, a rise from Sky Bet League 1 to the top flight was completed in half a decade.

Chilwell is certainly City’s present and future, while at Town he flourished under David Wagner, who had recently arrived at the Yorkshire club.

The Foxes are now in their fifth successive Premier League season and are the benchmark for newly-promoted teams.

But, while Huddersfield Town are not expected to repeat City’s odds-defying feat of 2016, the Terriers can draw inspiration from their East Midlands counterparts.

However, neither side can afford to rest on their laurels and sit on their successes of previous campaigns.

In a further player-connection between the two sides, Huddersfield added a safe pair of hands from City this summer as they acquired Ben Hamer, while Leicester purchased Terriers play-off penalty hero Danny Ward from his then parent club Liverpool.

The weekend's fixture gives both teams a chance to bounce back from defeat after the international break.

Leicester's home advantage and recent record against the Terriers sees them installed as favourites.

Although without the suspended Wes Morgan, Claude Puel has Jamie Vardy back in contention. England Under-21s international James Maddison, meanwhile, scored his second Leicester goal and impressed again in blue despite defeat away to Bournemouth.

But it will take a collective effort to beat a Huddersfield side who will be determined to secure their first win of the season.

Individual quality may win a battle, but a strong team performance should prove enough to ultimately seal the points.
