Leicester City’s Development Squad will be aspiring to close the gap at the Premier League 2 summit when Sunderland visit Holmes Park on Monday night (7pm kick-off).

The clash, which will be broadcast live and for FREE on LCFC TV from 6:45pm, presents the Foxes with an opportunity to close the gap on runaway leaders Liverpool to just four points.

Ahead of the Black Cats’ visit to Whetstone, here is everything you need to know…

Foxes on a roll

The Foxes, who are now third in PL2, recently sealed progress to Round 2 of the Checkatrade Trophy before going a point clear at the top of Group F in the Premier League Cup.

While a draw at Morecambe was followed by a loss on penalties, results elsewhere ensured Steve Beaglehole’s side will face Scunthorpe United in Round 2 of the Checkatrade Trophy.

A 0-0 stalemate with Portsmouth at Holmes Park on Monday night, meanwhile, ensures that City also hold a one-point advantage over Everton in their Premier League Cup group.

Sunderland in focus

Despite an impressive 1-0 success over champions Everton last month, courtesy of Luke Molyneux’s 85th minute strike, it’s been a disappointing season so far for Sunderland.

The Black Cats are bottom of the PL2 standings with just two victories to their name in nine outings, but that victory at Everton proves their quality.

A 2-2 draw at Manchester City back in September was another reminder that anything can happen at Under-23s level and so City will have to be wary at Holmes Park on Monday.

Last time out

Last Monday, City’s youngsters were held to a 0-0 stalemate by Portsmouth at Holmes Park in the Premier League Cup, despite another industrious display.

Admiral Muskwe and Josh Gordon went closest for the hosts, but Pompey also threatened during a clash in which neither side could find enough cutting edge to seal all three points.

Despite a frustrating outcome, a draw opens up a one-point lead for the Foxes over Everton at the top of Group F ahead of their meeting in Merseyside next month.

Progress pleases Beaglehole

“I thought defensively we were very good but we just lacked a cutting edge in the final third which ultimately cost us the three points,” Beaglehole said on Monday night.

“It may prove to be a very important point for us, though, and it takes us into top spot before we play Everton, both in the league and in this competition, next month.

“We’ve played a lot of matches in a short period of time and maybe it showed towards the end but I was pleased with the work rate of the players.”
