Leicester City’s central midfielder was selected in Portugal’s 23-man squad and will aim to play another significant role at a major tournament having helped his nation to European Championships glory two years ago.

Fernando Santos’ men open their campaign against 2010 winners Spain on Friday 15 June, but Silva says his side’s clashes with Morocco on Wednesday 20 June and Iran on Monday 25 June will be equally as challenging for the European champions.

“I remember all the games against Spain were very tough and spectacular,” said Silva when discussing his side’s World Cup chances.

Adrien Silva helped Portugal to the Euro 2016 title.

“The group is not only Spain and we have to focus on all of them because this level you don’t have easy games. You have to prepare well to get in good shape.”

Silva will link up with Real Madrid great and Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo for this summer’s flagship tournament.

“When you say leader, all the words you can say, he has,” said Silva of Ronaldo.

“He has the ability, the capacity inside and outside of the pitch to be a real captain. That’s very important for our team.”
