The 25-year-old Foxes goalkeeper saved three penalties at Molineux, including one stunning stop to deny Adama Traore - meaning spot kicks from Rachid Ghezzal, Vicente Iborra and Kelechi Iheanacho were enough for the visitors to reach the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.

Ward, speaking to LCFC TV at full-time, insisted that City deserved to win the match, which finished 0-0, in normal time, but was modest about his own contribution to the overall result.

“I thought we should have won the game in the 90 minutes to be honest,” he said.

“I don’t think it would have been fair on the boys if we would have lost out and thankfully we came out on the right side of it.

“As I have said before, in penalty shoot-outs it’s my job to save them and my heroes are the boys who put them in the back of the net.”

Discussing the pressure of being a goalkeeper in such circumstances, Ward added: “There isn’t [any pressure] until Christian [Fuchs] misses that first penalty!

“You’ve got to go in with the belief that you’re going to go the right way and save it, otherwise there is no point in standing there.

“You’ve got to back the boys as well and have the faith in them to put it in the back of the net.

“This is massive for us, we want to take this competition seriously, we want to go as far as we can, it’s not a training exercise, we do that on the pitch at the training ground.

“We want to progress and do as well as we can.”
