Jordan Ayew’s penalty, in first-half added time, had us in front on Filbert Way after a handball by Hayden Hackney. Alfie Jones was sent off for the high-flying visitors in the 90th minute too, but Ayling’s header at the very end snatched them a point.
The result leaves us 13th in the Sky Bet Championship ahead of Saturday’s trip to Carrow Road to tackle Norwich City (3pm GMT kick-off).
First-half chances
After a poignant sounding of The Last Post, for our Annual Remembrance Fixture, both sides carved out openings in the first half. From a free-kick, Luke Thomas - who had a loan spell at Boro in 2024 - picked out Caleb Okoli in the middle, but the Italian centre-back diverted wide.
Jakub Stolarczyk was then called into action to keep out Delano Burgzorg and David Strelec in quick succession.
Julián Carranza led the line for the Foxes, with Abdul Fatawu and Ayew operating either side. Another Thomas free-kick caused issues for Boro in the box too, although Carranza fired wide when it dropped for him. City were pushing up the pitch, mind you, and our opener wasn’t far away.
Taking the lead
The breakthrough arrived in first-half stoppage time. Fatawu’s cross looped up and Middlesbrough midfielder Hackney flailed an arm at it. Referee Adam Herczeg saw it clearly, took a moment, and pointed to the penalty spot.
Ayew assumed responsibility from 12 yards and calmly placed it to Sol Brynn’s left, with the Boro goalkeeper going the opposite way.
Stolarczyk had sustained an issue during the half and had to withdraw at the interval, with Asmir Begovic coming on to make his debut. Rob Edwards’ North East outfit, on the other hand, had won seven of their 13 matches before their visit to LE2, so the visitors were always likely to ask questions after the break.
Boro hit back
Morgan Whittaker had the Blue Army anxious six minutes after the restart, bending a dangerous curler from the edge of the area which Begovic watched drop onto the roof of his net.
Sverre Nypan’s low ball across the box then needed dealing with and Ben Nelson – back in the City XI – turned it behind for a corner, which we defended. Whittaker fizzed another attempt wide, while Begovic later made a terrific one-on-one save to deny Tommy Conway.
When Stephy Mavididi – on from the bench – raced through on goal, Jones brought him down and, as the last man, was shown a straight red card. Yet Boro, one of the league’s in-form sides, still pushed up. Six minutes past the 90, with almost the final action, Callum Brittain crossed and Ayling was there to nod home and rescue a point.
