Aaron Ramsey marked his first home start in style, netting a maiden goal for Leicester City to give the Foxes a deserved 26th-minute lead during an encouraging opening half at King Power Stadium.

Pompey, who did come close through Yang Min-Hyeok’s crossbar strike before the break, grew into the contest after the restart and levelled just before the hour as John Swift found the net.

Luke Thomas went agonisingly close to winning it late on, but both sides were ultimately left with a mix of relief and frustration after sharing the points on matchday 10. This was the first of three matches in eight days for City, who next travel to Hull City on Tuesday before heading to Millwall next Saturday.

Leicester start brightest

Following a cagey first 20 minutes, City soon found their rhythm, forcing Portsmouth goalkeeper Josef Bursik into action several times before the interval. The first real opportunity arrived when Harry Winks threaded a pass into Jordan James, whose curling effort from 20 yards was tipped behind.

Moments later, Abdul Fatawu’s ambitious half-volley whistled narrowly wide, and City’s pressure soon told. Fatawu – fresh from helping Ghana secure qualification for next summer’s FIFA World Cup – surged into space on the right and delivered a teasing cross.

It was slightly behind Ramsey, charging into the box, but the Burnley loanee stretched to guide it home past the onrushing Bursik.

Pompey fight back

Although Min-Hyeok rattled the bar soon after, Leicester remained largely in control. Ramsey went close again, seeing a fierce drive pushed around the post, while Fatawu tested Bursik once more after clever play from home debutant Julián Carranza.

Winks also went close with a curling strike that skimmed just wide of the far post.

Portsmouth’s equaliser arrived in the 58th minute, though. Min-Hyeok burst through midfield and found Swift, who cut inside sharply before driving a low effort past Jakub Stolarczyk at his near post.

Late chances for both

Martí Cifuentes turned to his bench in search of a response, using all five substitutions by the 75th minute. One of those, Jordan Ayew – another of Ghana’s World Cup-bound stars – created a half-chance, cutting in from the left and unleashing a strike that fizzed just wide.

While City pressed for a winner, Pompey also looked dangerous on the counter. Their best chance came 10 minutes from time when Mark Kosznovszky released Jordan Williams down the right, whose cross picked out Florian Bianchini. The winger’s shot lacked power but still forced an excellent stop from Stolarczyk.

Bobby De Cordova-Reid, another sub, saw a header gathered comfortably by Bursik, before the Foxes almost snatched it in stoppage time. With seconds remaining, Hamza Choudhury’s deep delivery found Thomas arriving unmarked at the far post, but on his 100th start for the Club, the Academy graduate could only slide his effort wide.
