Jack Grealish struck early to put the hosts ahead before Omar Marmoush capitalised on a defensive mix-up to double the home side's advantage before the break.
Despite a more resolute second-half display, the Foxes remain 19th in the table, 12 points from safety with eight games left to play. Early setback proves costly
Already expecting a stern test before kick-off, Leicester’s task became significantly harder just two minutes into the contest. A slick move down the right saw Savinho pick out Grealish in the middle, and the England international made no mistake, steering his finish into the bottom corner.
Bilal El Khannouss' curled effort, which flew narrowly wide, was Leicester's brightest moment of the first half.
Man City’s second came in the 29th minute, with Marmoush taking full advantage of an error between Wout Faes and Mads Hermansen. The Egyptian international’s strike clipped the underside of the crossbar on its way in, leaving the visitors with an uphill battle.
Second-half adjustments
Ruud van Nistelrooy stuck with the same starting XI that featured against Manchester United before the international break, persisting with a five-at-the-back set-up that has shown promise in spells but is yet to deliver the desired results.
Changes came in the second half, with Oliver Skipp replacing the booked Jamie Vardy, followed by Facundo Buonanotte and Caleb Okoli entering the fray. Jordan Ayew was also introduced later on.
Despite those adjustments, Leicester struggled to carve out clear-cut chances against a Man City side still brimming with quality – even in a season where Liverpool have opened up a clear advantage at the summit.
What’s next
One positive note for the Foxes was Ricardo Pereira’s return from injury, as he continues to recover fully from a long-term injury suffered the other side of Christmas.
Sidelined again, albeit briefly, for the Man Utd clash, the Portuguese full-back came off the bench with just under 15 minutes remaining, offering a boost for the travelling supporters.
Attention now turns to Monday night’s clash against Newcastle United at King Power Stadium (8pm BST), where Leicester will look to produce a response on home soil.
