Samuel Iling-Junior’s first-half breakthrough looked to be enough for the Baggies to claim all three points at The Hawthorns, but for an injury-time leveller, turned into his own net by Nat Phillips after substitute Bobby De Cordova-Reid sent a rasping volley across the box.
With 12 points now on the board after seven matches, it’s a quick turnaround with Wrexham due at King Power Stadium on Tuesday night (7:45pm BST kick-off), when we’ll look to extend our unbeaten home record in 25/26.
Early promise cancelled out
Jordan Ayew
The Foxes, unchanged from the goalless draw with Coventry City last time out, started on the front foot in the Black Country, with Jordan Ayew free to drive into the box within the opening stages, dragging his effort wide.
Those encouraging signs were extinguished in the 10th minute, however. Iling-Junior, on debut, weaved his way through City’s defence before planting the ball past a diving Jakub Stolarczyk. Advantage Albion.
Trading blows
Ricardo Pereira
Controlling the possession stats led to the Foxes carving out multiple opportunities. Jordan James fired a deflected effort narrowly over the bar after Ricardo Pereira teed him up, soon followed by a controlled Harry Winks volley, which wasn’t far away and had Josh Griffiths scrambling.
A trademark Abdul Fatawu effort flashed over the top too, and the Ghana winger soon sent a header off target, as City kept the pressure on in search of an equaliser.
At the other end, Jayson Molumby took aim from range but Stolarczyk got behind it. And Aune Heggebø kept our Polish shot-stopper busy after Charlie Taylor was first to a Stephy Mavididi cross, when Ricardo looked certain to score, but there was no way through in the first half.
The late equaliser
Bobby De Cordova-Reid
A half-time change saw Julián Carranza come on for James, pusing Ayew back into the no.10 role, though it was a defender who came closest, when Winks’ cross was headed into Griffiths’ arms by Jannik Vestergaard.
George Campbell could have made it two after a defensive mix-up allowed the centre-back a clean shot on goal from close range, but only able to find the side-netting, it was a let off for Leicester.
A series of chances came and went in the latter stages. Winks' curler didn’t trouble the ‘keeper and neither did Ricardo’s similar left-footed effort. Time was running out once a loose pass allowed Carranza a sight of goal, but his strike landed in the stand behind the goal.
A crucial moment was still to come. Josh Maja inexplicably missed from close range after Stolarczyk parried a free-kick, before Toby Collyer sent a shot wide, and Albion would come to rue those missed opportunities.
In the third minute of injury-time, Fatawu's clipped cross was acrobatically turned across the box by De Cordova-Reid, finding its way into the net via Phillips’ boot, much to the delight of the travelling Foxes housed at that end.
