Joining the Foxes
The little-known Jamie Vardy was signed from Fleetwood Town, of non-league, in May 2012. The transfer did generate headlines, mind you, with some outlets reacting with surprise at the reported fee, which will have been a record for a player outside the professional game.
A maiden goal
Jamie’s life at Leicester seemed to be getting off to the best possible start, netting on his debut in a League Cup tie at Torquay in the first month of the 2012/13 campaign.
Support from inside
He’d only find the net on another four occasions that term, though. Jamie has since revealed the close counsel of staff at the Club prevented him from leaving the Foxes before the glories which were to come…
Gunning for promotion
City’s patience with Vardy would ultimately pay off in the end. He found the net 16 times in 2013/14 to fire Nigel Pearson’s men towards the Championship title – ending our 10-year absence from the Premier League in the process.
First silverware in LE2
Delight for Vardy and his team-mates as Leicester win the Championship!
Making a name for himself
The Club’s first Premier League season in 10 years – and Jamie’s first-ever in the top flight – wasn’t going to plan in the early stages. Nevertheless, he still made headlines with an incredible display for the Foxes in a 5-3 comeback success over Man Utd.
England duties
Although ending the 2014/15 season with a fairly modest five goals, Vardy had clearly made an impression on England manager Roy Hodgson. He was called up to the Three Lions squad that summer, making his debut from the bench against Ireland. City, too, somehow preserved their Premier League status in the ‘Great Escape’.
Eleven heaven!
A fairy-tale was happening on Filbert Way in 2015/16 – and Vardy was in the middle of it all. He scored in 11 consecutive Premier League fixtures, a feat nobody else had ever achieved, to send Claudio Ranieri’s men racing to the summit.
Glory for City!
Well, they could! With 24 goals to his name, Jamie was our top goalscorer, firing in the goals which secured an unbelievable, odds-defying Premier League title success. We were champions of England – and Vardy was the name on everybody’s lips, later being crowned Premier League Player of the Season and FWA Footballer of the Year.
Finding the net for the Three Lions
Although England would want to forget UEFA EURO 2016, it was a summer to remember for Vardy, who also found the net at the championships in France against Wales.
Sticking with the Foxes
Despite reported interest from elsewhere, Vardy stuck with the Foxes that summer, starting as he meant to go on with a goal in the FA Community Shield against FA Cup holders Manchester United at Wembley.
Three past Man City
The 2016/17 campaign had its lows, as City struggled for form, but also its highs – like this rainy night in December when Vardy hit his first-ever professional hat-trick in a blistering 4-2 victory over Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
European prestige
An enormous away goal at FC Sevilla in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 kept our European dreams alive. We’d eventually win the tie 3-2 – overturning a first-leg deficit on an iconic night at King Power Stadium. Although a tough year, Vardy still registered 18 goals.
Another year, more goals
A stunning goal at The Hawthorns was the pick of Jamie’s 24-goal haul in 2017/18, meanwhile, as he continued to shine in England’s top flight.
The World Cup semis
There was heartbreak to come on the international stage, as Vardy and co were beaten by Croatia in the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Goals, goals, goals
The goals kept on coming back home, though, with another 18 in the 2018/19 season – including a winner at Stamford Bridge in December.
A historic night
A rain-soaked night in Southampton would be written into history in October 2019 – and not only because of another Jamie Vardy hat-trick. Brendan Rodgers’ men left the south coast with a 9-0 victory as they began to challenge at the summit once again.
A century in blue
Games were soon being contested behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but one constant remained: Vardy scoring goals. He registered his 100th in all competitions for the Club in a 3-0 victory over Crystal Palace once the season had resumed.
The Golden Boot
Twenty-three goals in 2019/20 would earn Vardy the Premier League’s Golden Boot award too. His rise from non-league to Premier League icon wasn’t slowing down.
Back on the European stage
A last-gasp strike at Braga in November 2020 got us through the UEFA Europa League group stage too – as City made their mark in another competition. He notched 17 goals that term as City sealed a second consecutive fifth-placed finish.
FA Cup history-makers
The 2020/21 season will, of course, be remembered for one thing only – Leicester ending their wait for FA Cup glory! The man who’d played in the early preliminary rounds was on the pitch in the final as City finally lifted the most famous domestic knockout trophy in football.
Another trophy in the bag
The FA Community Shield was added to Vardy’s collection in the summer of 2021, courtesy of a 1-0 win over Premier League winners Manchester City.
Still going strong
Another 17 goals came Vardy’s way in 2021/22. Although our UEFA Europa League journey would end in the group stage, more memories would be made in the newly established UEFA Europa Conference League.
Entering Rome
A gut-wrenching exit in the semi-finals – the furthest we’ve ever reached in European competition – came amid a spine-tingling atmosphere at AS Roma’s Stadio Olimpico.
A year to forget
The 2022/23 season, however, would turn out to be a damaging one. City were relegated from the Premier League and forced to return to the Championship.
Back in the big time
Vardy, though, stuck by the Foxes again, eventually scoring the goals to get them back into the Premier League – 20 of them, at the age of 37. Now City’s captain, Vardy had the honour of lifting the Championship trophy to the heavens – an honour he shared with Marc Albrighton and Ricardo Pereira.
Top marksman again
It’s been another tough year in the top flight this term, but that’s not stopped Vardy leading from the front. He remains City’s top goalscorer in 2024/25.
Goodbye to the GOAT
It was going to come one day, and now we must contemplate saying goodbye to our greatest-ever player. Thank you, Jamie. For everything.
