- LCFC Women beaten 4-0 by Chelsea at King Power Stadium- Leicester remain seventh in the Barclays Womenâs Super League- Willie Kirk gave his reaction following Sunday's defeat on Filbert Way- The Foxes face Liverpool next in the Adobe Womenâs FA Cup
City put in a valiant first half performance against the current Barclays Womenâs Super League champions, but a duo of goals right before the break set a precedent for the remainder of the game. Following defeat, the Manager spoke about the influence those goals had on the game but believes there were positives to take from the weekend. Kirk stated: âI think the game changed on the second goal, because going in at half-time it was hard for the players to understand the positives, and they think the game is running away from them. âThat allowed Chelsea to dominate the second half, but I think the first half was a completely different story. Once we weathered the storm in the first 10 minutes, I thought we were excellent.
âI thought we were the better team, but we didnât capitalise on our chances and final third entries. There was nothing that surprised us at half-time. We turned the ball over like we knew we would.
âWe played through and around them. We also knew Mayra RamÃrez would give the defenders the hardest game of their life, and she did. I donât think the performance matched the 2-0 scoreline, but in the second half, Chelsea completely dominated.â
Leicester looked to tire in the second period of play, as the Blues scored twice more to see out the win, and Kirk identified a lack of composure in both boxes.
The 45-year-old also talked about the Foxesâ development and how they are a work in progress, as they now build towards an Adobe Womenâs FA Cup Quarter-Final against Liverpool.
âThe fact that it was 2-0 allowed the second half to be what it was,â the Manager continued. âWe were chasing and getting a little desperate; going forward rather than retaining possession, which you can understand from the players.
âThe second half is a consequence of the first half, so most of the work will be on the first half and preventing that happening.
âWe had four chances to deal with the ball for the first goal, and you canât give Chelsea that number of chances. Itâs a little lesson for us, that if youâre not clinical when youâre defending, then thatâs going to happen.
âAt that point we couldâve been 1-0 up and that shows you how important it is to be ruthless, and we werenât. The second goal, we give the ball away quite cheaply, and that turned the game.
âIâm really happy with how the things are moving forward. We didnât change anything to face Chelsea, and we played our way to see where we are. Weâre moving along nicely and Iâm happy with the progress.â
