Sky Ride Treat For Foxes Fans

Thousands of cyclists will get the chance to ride round the pitch at Leicester City Football Club as part of this year’s Sky Ride.
For the first time ever, cyclists will be invited to ride their bikes alongside the hallowed turf of King Power stadium, celebrating the success of City’s promotion to the Barclays Premier League.

In what is sure to be a treat for Foxes fans and cyclists of all ages and abilities, the Sky Ride will include a loop of the pitch at King Power Stadium in its route.

The Sky Ride is now firmly established in Leicester’s annual calendar of events. It’s part of the city’s Ride Leicester festival, a week-long celebration of cycling that starts with the Leicester Castle Classic on 17 August and culminates in the Sky Ride, which takes place on Sunday, 24 August from 10am to 4pm.

Sky Ride gives people the chance to ride around the city centre on traffic-free streets that are ’open for people’, as part of a mass ride.

City Mayor Peter Soulsby said: “Sky Ride is always a hugely popular event, and I’m delighted that this year we’ve been able to team up with the football club to offer people the chance to cycle round the pitch at the King Power Stadium.

“Not only will this be a treat for football fans, but the whole route allows us to showcase some of the fantastic people-friendly streets and attractions our city has to offer and the ways in which you can get around easily and safely between them on a bike. We now have a premier football side, and we’re determined to provide a first-class city centre to match.”

Alan Birchenall, Leicester City Football Club ambassador, said: “It was a privilege for the club to be asked to get involved in something that is so significant for the city. Obviously with the club playing in the Premier League this season, it is important for us to take opportunities like this to give something back to the community. I am really looking forward to seeing so many faces here at King Power Stadium and it will hopefully make for a great day out.”

Janet Hudson from British Cycling said: “We have a great partnership with the city council and last year, we were able to offer family riders the unique opportunity to ride across the stage of the Curve theatre. Leicester City Football Club are fantastic and are providing an amazing opportunity for riders this year. Another first for Leicester!”

More than 12,000 cyclists took part in last year's event. This year’s Sky Ride is organised as part of the 10th annual Ride Leicester Festival and is a partnership between Leicester City Council, British Cycling and Sky.
