Goals Important For Pearson

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson believes that clean sheets are a valuable part of the game but prefers his side to be scoring and conceding than not creating chances at all.

The Foxes are the Barclays Premier League’s top home scorers after netting 10 times at King Power Stadium in front of the Blue Army.
City have only kept one clean sheet this season – in the 1-0 win over Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium – but only Chelsea’s Diego Costa has scored more than Leicester frontman Leonardo Ulloa.
The Argentine has netted five times this season while all three of City’s other strikers, Jamie Vardy, David Nugent and Chris Wood, are all off the mark.
And former centre-half Pearson admitted his side’s attacking style of play has been a major factor in their productive start to the 2014/15 campaign.
He said: “Clean sheets over the course of the season are going to win you a number of points. It’s also good for morale to be able to be in the knowledge you can play a tight game when required.
“For a side like ourselves we’re coming up against opponents who are a lot more clinical.
“We’re playing against players who are capable of scoring one goal from one chance – that’s where I suppose it’s a little bit different.
“You’re going to have to score enough goals to stay in any division and if that’s the emphasis that’s lopsided at the minute then it’s one that’s probably preferable than keeping clean sheets and being unable to score as well.”
And Pearson believes that the key to a successful defensive performance can come from the Club’s forward line.
Praising the work rate of his attackers, he said: “I think over the past couple of years in particular we’ve been effective defensively because our strikers work so hard so it’s a bit of both.
“We’ll always try to win games but you also make the point that you have to be hard to beat as well and that can be at both ends of the field.
“It’s about either being able to score effectively or to limit the chances for your opponent.
“If that doesn’t change we’ll have to continue to work at both sides of the game.
“I think most of our players understand that to be selected they’ve got to accept the responsibility of playing in both directions – we attack as a side and we defend as a side.”
