U18 Reaction: Rudkin Delighted With Table-Topping Youngsters

Leicester City Academy director Jon Rudkin admired the efforts of his side after they beat Fulham 5-0 in the Barclays U18 Premier League at their training ground on Saturday.

The Under-18s went into the break 3-0 up and added two more in the final 10 minutes at a rainy Belvoir Drive to register their fifth win in six games.
While the young Foxes’ ruthless finishing triumphed at one end of the pitch, it was the defiant Max Smith-Varnham keeping his side in the game at the other end.
The City No.1 pulled off a handful of impressive saves to ensure his side retained the lead at vital stages of the match.
After the win, Rudkin told LCFC.com: “The game was very tight. There were two good teams who were both trying to play in the right fashion.
“I think we showed that little bit of ruthlessness, something that we’ve been asking the team for. We demonstrated that with a couple of our goals.
“It certainly wasn’t a one-sided game as the score line suggests. Max Smith-Varnham pulled off a number of outstanding saves during the game at key times which have played their part in setting up the victory.
“Overall, I thought that there was some very good individual performances, and it was certainly one of our best performances at home.”
Rudkin’s youngsters now sit top of the Premier League after claiming 20 points from their opening 10 fixtures, netting 14 times in their last four games in the process.
Delighted to claim another win ahead of the international break, he added: “It’s always nice to be at the top of the table. As we’ve always said, it’s about the performance levels and about each individual’s display as well.
“Being up there at this level is obviously something that all the players can be pleased about. Our focus is that those individuals continue to progress through the ranks.
“Showing their desire proves that they’re learning as a squad. At this level, at 2-0 or 3-0 up you know that you’re never in a position to fully guarantee that you’re going to see the game out. There’s some very good quality.
“We really went about the task well and saw the game all the way through to 90 minutes. The players can be very pleased with that performance, but also, they have to remember the challenge from now is to demonstrate that in future games – that’s a very important factor.”
