Another Valuable Point For Pearson

City boss Nigel Pearson was pleased to see his side move a step closer to the Sky Bet Championship title on Monday night with a point in a 1-1 draw away to play-off chasing Reading.

A sensational Danny Drinkwater goal from 30 yards cancelled out Alex Pearce’s opener to move the already promoted Foxes to within six points of securing the league with just four games remaining.

In fact, if second placed Burnley fall to defeat away at Blackpool on Friday night, a win against Queens Park Rangers at King Power Stadium could even secure the honours for the Foxes as early as Saturday.

But after a game in which his side showed flashes of their brilliant best, the message from Pearson was to just keep picking up points. He told Foxes Player: “It’s another point, and it makes it more difficult for those around us. We want to make sure that whatever anybody else does, we earn the right to lift the trophy. It’s still in our hands and that’s all that really matters.

“We weren’t quite at our best tonight, but I said to the players that we can’t always expect to hit the heights that we have for the majority of the season.

“What I want to see us do is strive to do it. I think at times we were a little bit sloppy, but we showed some quality as well.

“We were disappointed to concede from a cheap free kick, so we’ve got to get better at that, but all in all, it’s a point in the right direction and with four games left we’ll try to get as many points as we can.”

Danny Drinkwater’s eighth goal of the season, as well as his polished all-round performance, earned many plaudits from those watching, and it came as no surprise to his manager, who is well aware of his qualities.

“He continues to play very well for us,” said Pearson. “Early in the game we didn’t really dominate possession in the way that I would like us to do. I think Danny was involved in a lot of our positive play though, so he’s a deserved choice for man-of-the-match.

“He’s improved immensely this season, and that’s credit to him. He’s not alone though, we’ve got a lot of players this year who have made improvements.”

One of those players to have shown those improvements this season – Matty James – was missing from the line-up after picking up a knock in training, but Pearson was hopeful that he can feature again before the end of the campaign.

He added: “It’s a concern because it’s his knee. The scan showed that there doesn’t appear to be a great deal going on in there, which is a positive for us and for Jamo (Matty James).

“It would be nice for him to finish what has been an excellent season while still competing for a place in the side.”
