Development Squad Prepare For Checkatrade Trophy

- The Development Squad begin their cup campaign against Sheffield United on Tuesday evening 

- Beaglehole’s outfit face further fixtures against Grimsby Town and Walsall 

Steve Beaglehole says the Development Squad are eager to kick off their Checkatrade Trophy campaign with a positive result when they face Sheffield United on Tuesday evening (7.45pm KO). 

Following a Premier League 2 fixture against Everton at Belvoir Drive on Thursday, the Foxes now head to Bramall Lane to face the League 1 outfit. 

It is the first of three Northern Group H fixtures, with a trip to Blundell Park to take on Grimsby Town following on Tuesday 4 October, before City face Walsall at King Power Stadium on Tuesday 8 November. 

The Development Squad’s involvement is set to provide the Club’s youngsters with some valuable Football League experience – something that Beaglehole says his side got a taste of in pre season against Chesterfield. 

He said: “It’s brilliant to be involved and it’s been talked about quite a lot recently because the competition aims to improve the pathway to first team football. 

“Although our league format now operates at Under-23s level, in the cup, we have to field six players that are under the age of 21, so it’ll be a really good test for them. 

“We’re very excited about it and we experienced what it’s like to play a League 1 side when we took on Chesterfield in pre season. 

“Sheffield United are a big team and they’re looking to get back into the Championship. They have a great ground with a really passionate crowd and you want your young players to experience that. 

“Some of the lads have already had experience out on loan in the Football League and they’ve progressed, so it’s a great platform for them to develop in.”
