Leicester City Named SPOTY Team Of The Year

- The Foxes’ Premier League heroics saw them scoop the evening’s penultimate award 

- Wes Morgan collected the award on stage alongside his team-mates 

Leicester City’s 2015/16 Premier League heroics were recognised at the 2016 BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards on Sunday, as the Foxes were named Team of the Year. 

Under Claudio Ranieri, who earlier in the evening picked up the Coach of the Year award, City shocked the footballing world with some outstanding team performances that exuded togetherness. 

Showing fighting spirit throughout the 2015/16 season, Ranieri’s men lost just three of their 38 Premier League fixtures, eventually having their champions status confirmed with two games to spare in May 2016. 

The entire Leicester City squad, alongside manager Ranieri and his coaching staff, were in attendance at the Genting Arena, Birmingham on Sunday to pick up the award – just a day after battling from two goals down with just 10 men to earn a 2-2 draw at Stoke City. 

Speaking on behalf of his team, skipper Wes Morgan said: “It’s a huge honour to receive this award. What we achieved was absolutely incredible. 

“No one thought we could achieve it. It was something that people thought was impossible but we proved it was possible. 

“I want to thank everyone behind the scenes at Leicester. They contribute so much to what we strive for and work towards. A big thank you to our fans too for their loyal support. 

“The gaffer has been incredible. He joined us and galvanised us and turned us into a winning team. We had a fantastic season.” 

City edged a number of teams for the award, including Manchester City Women, England’s rugby union team, Team GB, Mercedes F1 and Andy King’s Wales national team.
