Morgan Visits Refurbished Infirmary Children's Ward

Wes Morgan dropped by the Leicester Royal Infirmary to open a newly refurbished children’s outpatients ward following generous donations from the Blue Army to the LCFC Foxes Foundation.

The Leicester City captain, taking time out between victories over Liverpool and Hull City, was given a tour of the facilities, during the 2015/16 season, before meeting patients and their families, posing for photographs and signing autographs.

The Leicester Hospitals Charity was one of many selected last season among the Club’s official charity partners and has benefitted from the introduction of an uplifting, colourful and vibrant new environment for treatment and consultation, designed to enhance visitors' experience at the Infirmary.

Morgan, who spent an hour speaking to children and young people in the city centre on Thursday 2 March, said that investments like these build a bond between the Club and its community: “To come to the hospital today to unveil the new outpatients ward for the children is fantastic.

It’s good to see where the money goes and what it has done. To see how bright and vibrant the place is, it’s fantastic. It’s a big charity of ours, the LCFC Foxes Foundation, and to see how much money has been raised and where it’s being used is fantastic.

“Hopefully we can continue the good work and raise more money for projects like this. We do get to come down, mainly at Christmas, to see the children. It’s great to see their faces. They were perhaps surprised to see me today and it’s good to give something back to the community.”

The LCFC Foxes Foundation has thus far raised £1.6 million since 2012 and functions to help a number of local charities improve the lives of people across Leicestershire, particularly those which focus on children and young people, health, education and human services in the region.

The Leicester Hospitals Charity has received nearly £120,000 in the last five years towards schemes including the OurSpace Appeal, Leicester Baby Loss Appeal and a children’s and young people’s cancer unit. Gail Hacket, Ward Sister of the ward at the Infirmary, says donations such as these benefit both staff and patients.

She said: “Having this stunning artwork around the department has transformed the department from what was a blank canvas into a cheerful, bright and inviting environment. Not only for our children, our patients and their families, but also for our staff to work in.

It’s made it such a lovely environment to work in. We have designs for distraction during procedures. We can ask children to point out things on the wall and, in other areas, they are designed to be calming.

David Yeomanson, Head of Operations for Women and Children, added: "It’s really exciting for the children and their families. It’s a real morale boost for the staff, too, when people like Wes come into the hospital to see the families and the children.”
